Brass bands were at hand at some wine bars for the uncork ing of the young, fruity red wine and radio stations devoted programs to it. Paris Mayor Jacques Chirac was host at a celebration to mark the tasting event that has become a French institution "Beaujolais is like a virgin," said one French businessman sampling his first glasses of the 1982 harvest. “It is wonderful and magical for a while, but it cannot last ” Unlike aged wines, "primeur" Beaujolais is meant to be con sumed in the months immedia tely after its Nov 15 appearance. After that, it rapidly loses its flavor There are more long-lasting « w *1—i types of Beaujolais, "crus," which are aged like other noted French wines. But the "primeur," sampled about six weeks after it is harvested, accounts for about 35 percent of total Beaujolais production. "Beaujolais has become one of the most popular wines of France," said Steven Spurrier, owner of L’Academie du Vin in Paris "This year's crop will be 140 million bottles — a 25 per cent increase over last year and the largest crop since 1973." The bumper crop, however, has resulted in irregular quali ties this year, according to oen olgoists • "C'est comme ci, c’est comme ca,” said Geraud Ron gier, shrugging his shoulders in lukewarm reception to the wine known for its "unpretentious ness.” But Rongier, whose Val D’Or wine bar near the avenue Champs Elysees has won awards for the quality of wine he serves, refused to put a damper on the festivities "There’s never really a bad batch of Beaujolais," he said "It's just that some vintages are a little more appealing than others."
