Racial conference starts today
The fifth annual conference of the Willamette
Valley Racial Minorities Consortium, which
begins today in Salem at Chemeketa Community
College, will focus on "The Emerging Minorities in
Oregon "
Featured speakers are Alfredo de los Santos,
the vice chancellor of Maricopa County (Arizona)
Community College District, Matthew Prophet,
superintendent of Portland Public Schools and
Beatrice Medicine, from the anthropology
department, University of California at Northridge
The conference begins this morning with
several workshops and panels on business, poli
tics, education and community service Prophet
will speak at 8 p m and a dance, sponsored by the
Mujeres de Oregon, will follow
Saturday's events have been dedicated to a
student emphasis. A minorty business informa
tion center and an ethnic food fair will be featured
throughout the conference
The conference is being held in conjunction
with the Regional Conference of the Pacific
Northwest Black Studies Council
"Everyone is welcome to attend any or all of
the sessions," says Bean McFadden, director of
the University's affirmative action office
Registration is $15 for two days, $10 for one
day and $5 for students More information may be

Safecracker hits music school
About $1,100 in cash and
checks was stolen over the
weekend from the safe in the
University music school, accor
ding to Anita Vaughn, accoun
ting clerk in the music school.
Vaughn cautions those who
wrote checks for single tickets
to stop payment on their
checks She is not sure exactly
how many checks were in
volved, but she has notified
those she knows wrote checks

to play Eugene

a benefit concert for the Black
Student Union Saturday
