Sports Sore WSU to visit Ducks By Paul Danzer Ol the Emerald Two teams hurting in both the win column and the injury list will grit their teeth and go after victory number one of this Pac-10 football season when the Washington State Cougars visit Autzen Stadium for a 1 p.m. Homecoming contest with Ore gon As of mid-week the Oregon sick-list included quarterbacks Mike Jorgensen and Dana Hill, running back Ladaria Johnson, receiver-punt returner Eugene "Choo Choo" Young, center Ryan Zinke, defensive end Steve Baack, and safety Doug Judge At middle linebacker, veteran Chris Cosgrove should be ready return to action, but freshman Lerry Wilson has a question mark by his name after suffering a concussion in practice But if Oregon coach Rich Brooks thinks he has problems filling out his iineup card, he should talk to Cougar coach Jim Walden. Washington State's defense has been wiped out by injuries Walden welcomed nine retur ning starters back from the defense which helped the Cougars into the Holiday Bowl a year ago, but all nine have been lost for the season and WSU has stumbled to a 1-6-1 season "Everybody’s aware that we re not good enough at Washington State to lose 13 front line players, and still win eight football games," Walden said, referring to last year's 8-3-1 season In addition to the injuries on defense, the Cougars have had some pain on offense Both quarterbacks, Clete Casper and Ricky Turner, have been hit by the injury bug, but both have returned and are platooning in the option attack as they did so effectively last year for WSU Both will see action Saturday according to Walden Who will play quarterback for Oregon depends on who is Photo by Bob Baker Oregon punt returner Steve Brown is among the heatthy who will join the action at Autzen Stadium Saturday as the Ducks take a run at their first win of the season against Washington State healthy enough to run the offense Brooks said he would hand the controls to senior Kevin Lusk if neither Jorgensen nor Hill is ready to go. Jorgensen and Hill did not practice Monday or Tuesday this week, and Brooks expressed doubt that either would be ready to play With all the changes, Brooks will face more of a challenge in trying to cut down the mistakes and turnovers which have plagued his squad Last week, with Hill at the controls, the Ducks gave the ball up four times in the shadow of their own goalpost, and each turnover led to a Bruin score in the 40-12 loss "It doesn't help a lot,' Brooks said of the changes. Darticularly at quarterback But, I don’t think it's a major factor,' he said of the problems with mistakes The biggest challenge for the Oregon offense this week will be to run the option successfully against a team that is familiar with it. But Walden said he is f . once you’ve hit ROCK BOTTOM ... there’s nowhere else to go! 25%'- 70% Guaranteed Savings! on factory seconds.
