DMSO trial verdict finds friends’favor
From Associated Press
Friends and supporters of an
Oregon Health Sciences
University surgeon have
reacted with pleasure to the
dismissal of charges against the
prominent researcher of the
drug DMSO
Dr Stanley Jacob of Portland
had been charged with con
spiracy and giving illegal gratui
ties to a federal employee in
connection with his payment of
$36,000 to Dr K C Pam. a Food
and Drug Administration offic
ial The charges were dropped
Friday after Jacob admitted in
court that the payments created
a conflict of interest
"I tell you. I was so relieved I
couldn't stand it,” said Grace
McGrady, of Lilliwaup, Wash.,
widow of the late Pat McGrady
Sr , author of “DMSO: The
Persecuted Drug ”
"He didn't say he did it for a
bribe,” McGrady said "I hope
nobody blames Stan Jacob for
anything If they do. they'll have
to answer to me. and I’ll really let
them have it ”
Former Gov Tom McCall, a
former DMSO user, said the
trial's outcome was ' a very
excellent situation ." He said
Jacob was a humanitarian but a
poor businessman
Former Oregon Rep Bob
Duncan now practicing law in
Washington, D C . said the
decision saved face for both
Jacob and the government
"He always admitted it," said
Duncan, who had testified for
Jacob as a character witness
"The money had been given
The question was what was the
motivation "
Pani was the FDA's principal
researcher of DMSO — short for
dimethyl sulfoxide He pleaded
guilty on Oct 21 to a
misdemeanor charge of
receiving money from Jacob
The two were co-defendants in
a trial that resulted in a hung
jury in May
Jacob consistently has
maintained that his gifts to Pani
were to help pay Pani s wife's
medical bills and were not
intended as a bribe
