Sports Ducks shine as Irish tie By Mike Ripiinger Of the Emerald Coming close only counts with A-Bombs, hand grenades and horseshoes, but Oregon came about as close as you possibly can to getting a win when they tied Notre Dame 13-13 Saturday at Autzen Stadium The Ducks may have only gotten a tie as far as the win-loss column is concerned, but they came off the field with more than that. Something they've been looking for, for a long while •'Respect There is no doubt about it, they earned respect.” said Irish coach Gerry Faust of the Ducks "Shoot, they played a heck of a game It looked for a while like they were going to get it." It did Notre Dame was lucky to get out with the tie Oreg&n led most of the fourth quarter, with its defense keeping the Irish under wraps With only 2:35 left in the game, the Ducks stopped Notre Dame and forced them to punt The Oregon offense, which had moved the ball consistently against the Irish, ran against a stone wall and were forced to punt the ball back Notre Dame kick returner, Dave Duerson, fumbled the punt and he and the Ducks' Steve Johnson fought for the ball Duerson was able to come up with it at Notre Dame's 27, with only only 1 24 left on the clock Notre Dame quarterback Blair Kiel, who was benched earlier, led the Irish to the Ducks 18 yard line in nine plays From there, with only 11 seconds left, Irish kicker Mike Johnston split the uprights, and Duck hearts, to notch the tie “I'm extremely disappointed that we didn't win," said a drained Rich Brooks "I felt we deserved to win, and I guess on the other hand hadn't though, I'm thankful at the end at least it wasn't a loss " "The tie, although its not a satisfying thing, will give some people a little more respect for this football team, that is well deserving of some respect, even though we haven't had very many wins so far this sea son," he said Faust too, was impressed "They sure don't look like a team that has lost six games But we knew they would be tough They took Washington to the wire and have played some awful good ball this season It's just too bad they had to play it now," said Faust The Ducks did play well The Irish outgained the Ducks 253 to 211 in total yardage, but Oregon ran for 111 yards on the nation's leading defense against the rush Oregon also ran off more plays. 76-59, and controlled the ball longer, 32:43-27:17 "They moved the ball better than we wanted them to Much better," understated Faust Terrence Jones led the way for the Ducks gaining 63 yards, 21 more than what Notre Dame had averaged in an entire game Jones also scored the Duck touchdown with a one yard plunge The TD was set up when Os born Thomas hauled in a 22 yard pass from Mike Jorgensen, going out of bounds at the one That put Oregon ahead for the first time, 13-10, with over 10 minutes left in the game Oregon had gotten its earlier points on two field goals by Mike Lee Lee and Tim Wise just missed on two other occasions Lee missed from 31 yards out. and Wise failed from 48. with both kicks just wide For a team that was a two touchdown favorite coming off a loss to Arizona the week before, the Irish didn t play inspired football And they did not inspire awe in any of the Ducks "A lot of media people tried to talk my team into being in awe of this football team, but we wer en't," said Brooks We talked about it all week long that the four horseman weren't going to be out there on the field, or all the other good people Notre Dame has had in a great history and tradition of football " Mike Walter, who along with Steve Baack turned in stellar performances at defensive ends, wasn't altogether im pressed with the Irish “This was a big game It was just like playing SC (Southern California), but you know, it wasn't a conference game “It was nice to have the big crowd Other than that it was just another game, Walter said " The crowd was big and loud The 40,381 who crammed into Autzen amounted to the biggest crowd ever for a non-confer ence game It was also the first time in a long while that the crowd actually came alive and cheered throughout the game. The last time, ironically, was when the Ducks fought Southern Cal to a 7-7 tie in 1980 Walter summed up Saturday's game best "We didn't tie them, they tied us.“ Setters drop 2 home matches Her team had just taken 12th-ranked San Jose State to the limit before losing a close match, and it was obvious that Oregon women's volleyball coach Chris Voelz was proud of her team We had a complete team effort tonight, said Voelz with a beaming look on her face after the Ducks had lost 15-12, 15-12, 15-13 to the Spar tans "The girls have made an amazing amount of progress this season — it's a shame they don't have more wins to show for it " Oregon came up just short against the Spartans in the Saturday match after being handled rather easily by 18th-ranked Cal on Friday, 15-6, 15-7 15-13 Against San Jose State, the Ducks displayed the intensity Voelz has been searching for all season Oregon had its chances to win each game, but the Spartans managed somehow to hold on to victory Oregon, now 9-10 on the season and 2-6 in the NorPac conference, will be on the road next weekend for matches with Washington State Oct. 29 and Washington Oct. 30.
