New Wave to be exact... New Wave! New Wave! It’s being tout ed as the latest in a long succession of trends: New Wave hairdos — New Wave glasses — New Wave clothes — New Wave bands — almost everything is being swept up on the crest of the New Wave But what is New Wave? Where did it come from'’ Can a trend that is mostly visual and musical be defined adequately? New Wave, like so many previous movements in style and sound, originat ed in Europe Americans have a pen chant for watering-down, adopting and then exploiting to destruction the trends of European youth. New Wave has become the stuff of television commer cials and video games New Wave is an outgrowth of late '70s Punk and the Neo-Mod movement in the United Kingdom As with '60s trends there, music and clothing are all a part of the style Punk (and its precursor, Eng lish pub rock) was a refreshing antithesis against the backdrop of boring old farts like Fleetwood Hack, Elton Hack, Jethro Hack and Rod Hack The relevance of Punk music to the social realities of youth in the United Kingdom can't be i overlooked If they were good it was worth a complimentry gob Punk was clothes and accoutrements — zips, razors and rips The longstanding obligatory flows of Beatle-like mops were rendered passe with spiky and multi hued Punk hairstyles Like clothing styles, Punk hairstyles were purposely anti-style Paralleling the rise of Punk was a resurgence of the '60s Mod movement Mod then and now, is exemplary of the fusing of music and fashion Mod styles are sharp Well, Townshend said it best: “My jacket’s gonna be cut clean and Continued on page 5B /w \ Seven of the Delta Gamma sisters pull off as many great mini looks with panache. Mini Skirts! A short new wavet Again? Evidently, no one completely buried high-rise hemlines 12 years ago This time, the new mini wave is rushing in with fullblown pizazz The skirts are soft and full, new wavish and old-timey They're swishy, kick-pleated, slung waisted and flattering to a number of legs Their greatest asset this season is adaptability The mini skirt can rise 3 inches, 5 inches, even 10 inches above the knee It can be dressed up or down, act like r shorts or a dressy dress It can be worn with tights, leg warmers, neon anklets, knee socks or sheer-seamed stockings Any low shoe — strapped flats, shiny tuxedo pumps, tennis shoes, sandals, cuffed boots — looks great with one All it needs is a little proportion It’s funny the way mini skirts have crept back Hints popped up last spring when they began to appear in bright jersey and striped, sweatshirty fabrics Then the California girls went home for the sum mer and returned with trunkfuls Meanwhile, New Wave trends have gained momentum, hemlines have gone awry and no one s taking fashion advice from anyone in particular No doubt, people are deciding what's hip, and comfortable, on their own Around campus, nobody appears especially nonplussed by them Certainly some notice the legs more than the skirt, but the initial shock and not-again dread have given way to some skepticism, mild acceptance and noted expressions ol three-martini enthusiasm ■< By Angela Allen * *tfc 3 s HEAD NIKE.
