Sponsored by UO Outdoor Program FIRST D€SC€NT of the KRRNRLI RIV6R A slid.- presentation tn four .■ \ Mason of the Himalavan Whitewater t.pedmon pat coussens outdoors with the cooz Opening day No. I don't do Grape Nuts commercials teaching spoiled juveniles to respect nature And no, the zipper handle on my ski jacket does not serve as a dis play for lift tickets from all corners of the world Admittedly, I have never, like some outdoor enthusiasts, at tempted to give a beached whale mouth-to-mouth resusci tation Still, I am your Emerald out doors columnist for this year And, incidently, I'm not doing it just for the six-pack There are. in fact, legitimate reasons why I've decided to add some class to this newspaper The major reason may stem from my experiences in the out doors that have thrust me into a role as an authentic, self-made story teller I mean, any born and bred Willamette Valley farmboy has naturally had his share of exposure to the elements It is said that Indians and trappers make the finest story tellers in this region of the country I would like to amend that statement by adding the word "me" to the list of the finest It therefore, goes without saying that this isn't one of those conventional outdoors columns My approach is not one of certain Northwest fraternity men who talk of harvesting a five-point elk using only their hands and teeth At the same time, I attempt to escape the style of the English professor who swears by the Hemming way grasshopper for landing that elusive 20-incher My desire is to review the ex periences of the typical Oregon weekend sportsman — in other words, recapping that brand of experience in the wilderness that has forced j many of us to discover an infinite number of toilet paper substitutes Yes, we re talking about those ven tures that have increased the population of non-quiche eaters Growing up in the shadows of some of the Northwest's most colorful outdoorsmen, I've al ways been compelled to match some of the feats accomplished by the old-timers. After several cases of frostbite and poison oak, someone finally got around to telling me that most of their stories had been exaggerated For all I knew, cutting firewood with car keys was a great way to avoid extra weight while hiking Nevertheless, my love for the outdoors is still — well — evident And it is with these humbling experiences that I've formed my realistic approach toward outdoors writing I guess my readers could best be classified as those who want to know the nearest 7-11 stores to the wilderness areas. Yes, I can probably tell you where to buy ice anywhere in the state Anyway, tis the season for the traditional Northwest out ings, and throughout the term, we'll be taking a look at some of the things that make living here more that just rain and unemployment Until next time, remember that reading my columns can au tomatically improve your image, I’ll have you driving a motor home in no time Happy hiking!
