Cafeteria QUICHE 80* r.1:^ imported Coffee & Teas 860 E. 13th Ave. -Kinko’s* 344-7894 poul danzer dribbling around On my way to class the other day, I ran into a friend I hadn't seen since last spring • Hey!” he shouted, "Who’s going to win the pennant?” I was slightly taken aback The question, of course, seems logical enough After all, the league playoffs were just getting underway Ba seball was moving from the drama of the divi sional races toward the World Series But, coming from this friend, the question was out of character You see, my friend is an All-Pro armchair quarterback The only ball he was familiar with was a pigskin spiral The only pitcher he cared about was the one filled with beer at his side I recovered from my surprise, and assured my friend that the St Louis Cardinals will fly to the top of the baseball world this year "The Cardinals!” he retorted "They won’t even beat the Braves Murphy and Horner hit more home runs this year than the entire Cardinal team True,” I said, still not believing what I was hearing, "but the Cardinals’ speed makes up for it And besides, they have Bruce Sutter in the bullpen He had 36 saves this year, once the Cards get a lead they won't be beat " By this time I was dying to ask him when he had discovered baseball, a sport he often de scribed as sissy. “What could be fun about a game like baseball,” I remember him saying. “The only thing that ever gets hit is a little white ball, and it never bleeds ” It was, of course, a stupid question He admitted his discovery of America’s pasttime occurred just three weeks ago when he turned his TV dial in search of his beloved Cowboy's and found the Padres and Braves instead "Those NFL slobs are nothing but a bunch of egotistical, self-serving jerks," my friend said "All they care about is padding their wallets ” I sympathized with him, but I pointed out that there are two sides to every conflict "NFL players are underpaid,” I said, "especially when com pared with other professional athletes The big problem is, they want to change the system, not just their bank accounts.” "Yeah,” my friend said, "But they don't care about the fans ” "Sure they do,” I answered "That's one of the reasons they tried to schedule those All-Star games The person who is only thinking of himself is Ed Garvey, the players' union leader He has been unwilling to budge from his unrealistic demand of 55-percent of gross revenue That's the problem " "Maybe so,” he replied, "but they don't have the same feeling for the fans that baseball players do Tommy Lasorda and the Dodgers were all out on the mound last week saluting their fans for supporting them so well, that is what sports is all about. You know baseball drew a record number of fans this year.” “I know,” I said “That's very nice But do you remember what baseball players treated the fans to last season?” It was another stupid question since my friend had only been following baseball for three weeks "I know the Dodgers won the World Series," my friend answered “The Dodgers didn’t even belong in the playoffs," I said "Cincinnati had the best record in baseball, but didn’t get to go to the playoffs because of the strike which split the season in half.” "Oh well,” he said, ‘ that was last year. This year is all that matters now, and the Braves are on the way.” “That is what the football people will be saying a year from now," I said as I headed into the classroom "Who cares about football now,” my friend yelled back "It’s three strikes and you’re out.” Fall Schedule of Activities Activity Bowling* Slow Bike Race Frisbee Golf Tournament Golf Scramble Ultimate Frisbee Tournament Cross Country Meet* Predict Time - Fun Run Bowling Doubles Wrestling 3X3 Basketball Racquetbail Doubles Crippled Turkey - Fun Run Basketball Tune-up Tournament Dhr.* M-W-C M-W M-W M-W M-W-C M-W-C M-W M-W-C M M-W M-W M-W M-W Min. # Entry Play Deadline 4 10/15 1 10/12 1 10/15 2 10/15 7 10/15 4 10/18 1 11/3 2 11/3 4 11/5 3 11/8 2 11/12 1 11/17 5 12/11 * Intramural Sport - Under IM Regulations * M-Men W-Women.
