Atiyeh, Kulongoski debate: parting shots MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Gov Vic Atiyeh and Democratic challenger Ted Kulongoski accused each other again Monday night of lacking the ability to lead Oregon out of the economic reces sion The pair completed their third and final debate scheduled before the Nov 2 general election Kulongoski, a state senator from Junction City and a labor lawyer, drew the warmest applause from the Southern Oregon Central Labor Council, which sponsored the debate Atiyeh said his record shows that he has worked to heln Oreaon’s timher industry, diversify its economy and improve its image "I'm for the working people more than he is,” Atiyeh told 250 union members at the Medford Labor Temple A few Libertarian Party members were outside the building with picket signs protesting the exclusion from the debates of their candidate, Paul Cleveland Atiyeh said Kulongoski's support for plant closure legislation last year "sent a chill outside Oregon” and threatened to cost the state jobs Plant closure legislation called for comDanies to aive advance notice hefore shutting down operations and, in some forms, required corporations to pay extra taxes and benefits to workers before leaving the state The legislation did not pass Kulongoski introduced one of three plant closure bills but later renounced the advance notification and punitive payments of the proposals However, he says the state must do something for towns affected by mill closures Kulongoski attacked Atiyeh more strongly than in previous debates on the governor s support of Reaganomics, the economic theories that Kulongoski said have caused 100.000 Oreaonians to lose their jobs Kulongoski told the audience that Atiyeh supported President Reagan's theories and that the governor said Reagan was good for Oregon He said Atiyeh began trying to separate himself from Reagan s policies in March, when it became apparent that Reaganomics was not working Asked how he would deal with the state's limited tax revenues in budgeting for the next biennium, Kulongoski said the first step is to develop a technique for forecasting that doesn't look at the world through “the rose-colored glasses of Reaaanomics."
