Oregon will kick things off Friday when they pay a visit to the University of Pacific, then will travel to Fresno State to challenge the Bulldogs. In UOP, the Ducks will face their biggest challenge of the season Pacific is ranked second in the nation and features Jan Saunders, who Oregon coach Chris Voelz called, "one of the finest setters around." The Ducks must also be wary of middle blocker Robin Burns and hitter Therese Boyle. "We'll have to contain Burns and Boyle," Voelz said The match against Fresno State will pit two of the confere nce's youngest teams The Ducks start three or four freshmen each match and Fresno's roster is also short on experienced members. "We don’t know too much about them except what's on the scouting report,” Voelz said. "They're very young and inexperienced, and we beat them at junior nationals last summer, but it won’t be the same team we played before,” The Ducks will be without Shaunna Koenig, who is side lined for three weeks with a hand injury, but the rest of the team appears to be healthy Annetta Ensworth, injured at the BYU Invitational, should be ready to play Also, Stephanie Tambe returned recently from an ankle injury. Cathy Hill, last year’s team captain and All-America nominee, is sitting out this season because of a knee injury that required surgery. Voelz knows it will take a yeoman effort to beat UOP, but she thinks her team is ready "We seem to be progressing since the beginning of the season," she noted. "We need to do a better job of blocking, and we have to go out and play our game. We ll have to have good defense.’’ Last year, Oregon took a tough Pacific team to five games before losing The bad news for Voelz is that this Pacific team appears to be just as good “They’re young, but they have done a great job of recruiting They have a lot of players with national and international experience,” says Voelz The two matches this weekend will be the first taste of the new NorPac conference for the Ducks, and Voelz seems glad about the step up to a tougher league. If we played the same schedule this year that we played four years ago, we would be 44-0." Besides UOP, Oregon and Fresno State, the NorPac Conference includes California, Washington, Santa Clara, San Jose State, Oregon State, Washington State and the University of San Francisco. One of Oregon's goals is to fin ish in the top four, according to Voelz, which would put them in the conference championships. One team Oregon will not play this year is traditional rival Portland State. The Vikings have dropped to Division II and are playing in the Rocky Mountain Conference.
