Derailed chemical train burns out of control LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) - A 101-car freight train carrying explosive and poisonous chemicals derailed early Tuesday, igniting a roaring fire and setting off a string of explosions that forced evacua tion of residents as far as five miles away The fire was so intense and the danger so great that officials said they were at a loss as to how to halt the blaze No serious injuries were reported After the 5 a m derailment, all 2,000 residents of Livingston were evacuated as three cars of heavy oil burned Some 10 hours later, a tankcar of tetra ethyl lead burst into a fireball and spread hazardous fumes, Officials don’t know how to put out Louisiana blaze forcing the expanded evacua tion to rural homes to the west and northwest "The intensity of the fire has increased significantly and now seriously threatens to rupture adjacent ethyl chloride tank cars," said state police spo kesman Lt Ronnie Jones, who relayed the constantly changing information to reporters miles from the fire scene "We are shutting the town of Livingston down,” Col Grover "Bo" Garrison, commander of tha state police, said early in the day A photographer was injured slightly when an explosion knocked him from a roof at about 9 a m Five people were examined at a hospital for smoke inhalation The train crew escaped uninjured "The flames are tremen dous," said Wilie Graves, a spokesman for the Livingston Parish sheriff's office "You can stand a half-mile away and hear the roar." Fannie Albin, a Livingston re sident. said the derailment jolt ed her awake "I thought it was an earthquake Then my daughter came yelling down the hall, Mommy, Daddy, everyth ing's on fire!' ” Four blocks from the derail ment. 20-year-old Lisa Needham said she awoke and thought it was "an earthquake or the world coming to an end Then I saw the fire My whole room lit up " "We are at a stalemate as to what to do," Lt. Jones said “Because of the nature of the chemicals we cannot go in and use water because of the way it would react with sodium And we cannot go in with foam bec ause it would contain the heat and cause some tanks to rup ture” If water touches sodium, the waxy silver metal explodes and releases hydrogen, which would feed the flames still more Sgt Pat Touchard of the state police hazardous materials divi sion said authorities did not know how far the metallic sodium was from the fire and therefore could not tell which cars could safely be wet down to keep them cool Jones said three cars of heavy oil are burning out of control. Adjacent to them was one of tetra-ethyl lead, which he said is so explosive that it could cause a fireball a half mile wide Cause of the derailment was not known.
