a un*aucS*°ra9e space can be ,qUe’ moving experience By MARK PYNES What happens when you’ve moved all your worldly poses sions from Wartburg, Iowa and discover you can't fit all five rooms full into that tiny studio apartment? You can either store it, move it back, or sell it If you're unwilling to part for ever with those antique wooden cigarstore Indians, your great grandmother's fur-lined, ele phant umbrella stand, your pre Civil War cummerbund collec tion or those other irreplaceable items, then storing it or moving it back is the answer It's often cheaper to store ex tra things in a friend's garage but if that isn't possible there are over two dozen storage warehouses in the Eugene Springfield area At one mini-warehouse, Sav N-Lock, the rates range from $16 50 per month for a 4x10 room to $53 for a 10x22 Judi Jackson, a Sav-N-Lock employee, says the 4x10's are full during the summer because a lot of university students store their things when they go home During the winter the ware houses are used by people who have an overflow of things from their garages People rent storage space for as little as one week and some have been at Sav-N-Lock since they opened over seven years ago, Jackson says The warehouses are for "strictly storage" adds Jack son They don’t allow people to work on cars or furniture in the storage areas If you'd rather send those superfluous items back home — let the folks worry about storage — then your only problem is shipping One moving company. Allied Van Lines, charges on a weight and miles scale to send items interstate, and the majority of their business is relocation of whole families There is a 500-pound minimum weight limit and according to an em ployee it takes between 4,000 to 5,000 pounds of goods before it is worthwhile In Oregon they charge an hourly fee of $62 45, which provides two men and a van with a minimum half hour require ment, if the move is beyond a 30-mile radius the charge is again based on weight and miles. For example, to send 500 pounds of goods to Medford would cost about $186 An alternative is to move those things yourself If you don't have your own truck or trailer you can rent them from several rental companies that allow both one-way and two way rentals U-Haul, a national moving company, rents seven to 24-foot trucks and 4x6 and 6x12 trailers Their rates vary ac cording to the number of trucks and trailers they have on hand and according to the destina tion (mileage and time) To rent a 4x6 foot trailer one-way to Chicago would cost $166 and a seven foot truck would cost $853 For local use truck rates are between $35-45 per day and 20 cents a mile The beginning of the school year is the busiest time accord Continued on Page 10B Cheap transportation available By HANK TROTTER In Eugene, inexpensive means of transportation are as easy to find as a bowl of granola University cheapskates should have no trouble at all getting from one place to the other with very little cash down Hitchhiking, ridesharing, city buses, used bicycles and used autos are as widely employed and accepted in track town" as is running Thumbing a ride in Eugene is legal and acceptable under an Oregon law which specifies that the hitchhiker must stand off the public roadway on a sidewalk or gravel shoulder However, Eugene's disagreeable winter clime may force many hitch hikers off the streets and high ways and into the dry comfort of a cheap used car r There are over 60 used car dealerships in the Eugene Springfield area and numerous independently advertised "wrecks" for sale Clunkers costing $200 to $300 are as common as the gas-guzzling, aging cars being unloaded by their owners For those who already have a gas-guzzling monster and can t afford to drive it to school or work, the Eugene City Rideshare Program has a solu tion Rideshare matches riders by area and work time much like a computer dating service matches two lonely hearts through musical tastes and movie preferences Prospective ride sharers are introduced and, if they find each other compatible, proceed to share rides.
