Junior quarterback Tom Tunnicliffe (6-0, 187) passed for 1,420 yards last year, while running backs Vance Johnson (5-11, 170, sophomore) and Brian Hol land (5-10. 193, junior) combined for 1,231 yards last year Johnson, who also returns punts and kickoffs, was ranked 16th nationally in all-purpose yardage, averaging 141 5 yards per game Tunnicliffe's aerial targets will include tight end Mark Keel (6-3, 216), who caught 27 passes in 81, and senior split end Kevin Ward (6-1, 187), who hauled in 25 passes for 401 yards The Wildcats return only two of their starting offensive linemen, but one is senior tackle Jeff Kiewel (6-4, 257), second team AII-Pac-10 in '81 But, it's hard to tell how much impact Hunley. Lesnik, Johnson, Kiewel, et al will have, con sidering the schedule "I don't think there is any question it's the toughest schedule ever at the University of Arizona,'' says Smith 9 California Is it the California Golden Bears or the California Kapps? You would think the latter, the way Cal is carrying on about its new coach, Joe Kapp "Joe Kapp is California football," says Dave Maggard, Cal athletic director Which is wonderful, except that Kapp has never coached a football game at any level Never fear, for Kapp's philosophy is "Play to win " Considering that Cal returns 21 of 22 starters, including all 11 on defense, Kapp should logically have a chance to exercise his philosophy this year Unfortunately, those 11 defensive starters were ranked ahead of only Oregon State in team defense last year The Bears gave up an average of 393 8 yards and 26.1 points per game on the way to a 2-9 season. The Bears do have some quality defensively Junior Ron Rivera (6-3, 225) was second team AII-Pac-10 at linebacker last season He led the team with 99 tackles, 13 for losses. He will be joined at linebacker by Rich Dixon, first team AII-Pac-10 in '80 and a third team All-American the same year Dixon redshirted last fall with a knee injury The only other defender of note is four-year starter Freddie Williams (5-9, 192), who had 59 tackles and nine pass deflections at cornerback last year. On offense, the Bears have permanently dumped the "Run and Shoot." former head coach Roger Theder's noble experiment that resulted in 43 3 percent passing completion a year ago Kapp has installed a T-formation, and will depend on sophomore Gale Gilbert (6-3, 205), with only 10 pass attempts last year, to run the show The Bears may not need much in the way of quarterbacking if transfer running back Elton Continued on page 21 PETE’S ITALIAN KITCHEN Specializing In: HOMEMADE PIZZA AND ITALIAN FOOD DELIVERY SERVICE 5 P.M.
