Saturday Market: pasta to pottery By Hank Trotter Ot the Emerald Does the prospect of another Saturday sitting in front of the dorm television have you bored? Then how about a sampling of everything from pasta and pizza to pottery and pillows, all hand made with a commitment to quality You'll find it at downtown Eugene's Saturday Market, located at Seventh Avenue and Oak Street At the county parking lot turned marketplace, a typical Saturday will find you tasting delicious tempura vegetables and calzoni pizza, with a smoothie to wash it all down and a tempting piece of cheesecake for a finale You can sit and enjoy the scheduled reggae, jazz or folk music and laugh at the antics of spontaneous preformances of mimes and jugglers After a filling meal and rous ing entertainment, some 200 colorful booths brimming with handmade goods are lined up for leisurely browsing Then, a quick snack of quiche before you walk across the street to the Farmer's Market, an offshoot of Saturday Market There, local produce can be purchased or free kittens picked up "It's a celebration of creativi ty,” llene English, assistant manager of the market, says of Eugene's unique open air crafts and foods fair ' Artisans can meet the con sumer face to face,” English says."The consumer can share the excitement of the work with it's creator.” Begun in 1970 as a meeting place for local craftspeople and consumers, Saturday Market has since grown into a tradition with many successful offshoots. English credits Saturday Market for the drive behind Fifth Street Public Market. Portland Satur day Market, Blair Island res taurant and many other busin esses in Eugene "Many of these hippies have grown into respectable busin essmen,” English says of the market's original vendors Though a broader range of people are now beginning to enjoy the Saturday Market s pleasant sights, sounds and smells, the market has left its founding ideals intact Everyth ing must still be handmade of completely natural materials. For the vendors, it’s a chance to show their wares and to socialize with other artisans “The market becomes like a family," English says.
