Cross, 22, plans to enter law school next year after graduat ing from the University in poli tical science. He is a member of the Springfield Parks and Recrea tion Board, and advocates local land use planning and lower taxes • The office of District 22 state senator, vacated by Kulongoski, is being pursued by Republican Jonathon Bates and Democrat William (Bill) Frye. Bates, a University alumni, represented west Eugene on the city budget committee, and runs two pre-schools with his wife. He puts jobs, elimination of LCDC and crime high on his list of priorities Frye, 53, has degrees from the University's schools of jour nalism and law, and has twice served as Lane County district attorney. He is interested in a progres sive state income tax, and sees small businesses as the key to Oregon's economic recovery • A newspaper editor and dentist-rancher are squared off in the newly-formed House Dis trict 38 In addition to ranching and dentistry. Republican Cedric Hayden has been a part-time faculty member at the Universi ty's Health Sciences Center and LCC. He plans to work for more jobs, less government, and fewer taxes as he represents the "helicopter district.” Democrat Chuck Bennett edits The Stayton Mail, and at tended the Graduate School of Administration at Willamette University He was House District 55 Democratic Party nominee in 1978 Bennett says he is committed to the timber industry and rural Oregon • Democrat Grattan Kerans has held the position of state repre sentative for District 39 since 1974. He was House majority leader during the 1979 and 1981 sessions, and gives conserva tion and labor as some of his strong areas He is opposed by 39-year-old Jerry Riley, River Road Church of Christ minister. Riley has government exper ience on the Lane County Health Advisory Committee, and says he is committed to creating jobs, promoting justice, strengthening the family, and providing responsible leader ship • Republican Robert O'Reilly was treated to a pleasant sur prise when incumbent Democrat Margie Hendricksen announced her decision to drop out of the race for 40th District State Representative Two more challengers have since stepped in, however Democrat Carl Hosticka, as sistant public policy professor at the University, says the cen tral issue in the race is financing state government. He supports the Oregon Democratic Party's economic recovery package, which em phasizes Oregon relying on it self for recovery. Consultant work with local governments for several years and his position as vice-chairer on the Lane County Budget Committee are part of his government experience The Lane County Citizens Party has nominated Laurel Paulson to run in this race Paulson received her B.A and M A in sociology from Humboldt State University, and has seven years of experience in banking. Now an LCC financial aid counselor, she is also a member of the board of trustees of Lane County Public Defenders and vice-chairer of a criminal rehabilitation social service or ganization She supports the party's plat form, which includes an em phasis on public investment in Oregon O'Reilly, a professional man agement analyst, thinks he can use his consultant experience to streamline bureaucracy • Rep Mary Burrows will face Democrat Mike Grove for her District 41 seat which she has held since 1972.
