Speeches, symphonies, and sambas are among the record ings that can be heard in the third floor Douglas Listening Room The Reference Department, on the first floor, features card and microform catalogs by sub ject, author or title However, the subject cat alogue is now more up-to-date on microform than on cards Students wanting to do an extensive search on a subject in a short time can use the library ’s computer data base searching service, at $2 and up per search Since the library cannot be completely comprehensive on every subject, membership in a computerized interlibrary loan system allows material to be borrowed from more than 5000 other member libraries. Silvernail says the University library tries to collect materials in-depth in the areas it is re sponsible for, and support the courses on campus Books can be borrowed for two weeks, and be renewed for up to six weeks Students must have a cer tificate of validation to borrow material Newspapers and magazines cannot be checked out. Overdue books bring a fine of 25 cents per day, but no charge is made for under $1, and the maximum fine is $10 Books needed by the library may be called in, and a delay in returning it can bring $1 per day charges No overdue notices are sent out, but the circulation staff reviews the charge cards for overdue material after about two months, and does a search on them, according to Shirien Stevens, circulation department head The charges accrued by that time can be steep, Stevens says She recommends marking due dates on the calendar as a reminder Sending out overdue notices and other tasks will be much easier when circulation is even tually automated, Stevens says, but technology has already come to the exit gate.
