Runyan heads up newly merged depts Dean Runyan, associate professor of urban planning, has been appointed head of the new Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management in the School Architecture and Allied Arts at the University The appointment became ef fective July 1 The department is the result of the merger of the Department of Urban Regional Planning in the architecture school and the public affairs program of the Wallace School of Community Service and Public Affairs CSPA was suspended during a recent round of budget cuts, and its programs transferred to other schools Runyan, 38, takes over a por tion of the duties of Kenneth Tollenaar, previously acting dean of CSPA, and David Povey, former head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Dean Runyan brings to his new position a particularly strong sense of the importance of integrating theory and prac tice in the planning and public policy field While at Oregon, he has helped to build the com munity workshop program which has enabled students and faculty to have a major impact on planning policy in the region,” says Wilmot Gilland, architecture school dean He noted that Runyan s re search on tourism and environ mental analysis and man agement are appropriate Host program helps students to adjust Wizened University veterans always cast bemused glances at the rookie students walking slowly around campus with map in hand and wearing an expres sion of both awe and fear To ease the new students into the rigors of University life a host program has been developed in conjunction with the Orientation Office The program, called the New Student Host Program, starts today at 1:30 p m at Hayward Field. A hundred volunteer students will be on hand to in troduce freshman and new transfer students to the Univer sity Throughout this week the hosts will act as resources for the new students They will en r courage them to participate in social, recreational and academic programs available during new student orientation The NSHP will have a flyer describing a number of events and activities they are sponsor ing at the EMU Information Booth and at the Information Booth in Oregon Hall NSHP sponsored activities include a Root Beer Garden, a free bicycle tune-up. a free Roller Skating tour of the cam pus, and magical Ice Cream Social. More information on the pro gram and the activities can be obtained by calling NSHP at 686-4292, or calling the Orien tation Office at 686-3218 Law school appoints two assistant deans Sharon Gordon. 31, and Peggy Nagae. 30, have been named assistant deans at the University 's School of Law Gordon replaced Douglas Haldane in April as assistant dean for public affairs She oversees alumni relations, development and placement services. Nagae replaced Caroline Forell July 1 as assistant dean for academic affairs. She oversees financial aid, student advising and other academic programs Haldane is now in private practice in Eugene and serves as an adjunct professor at the law school. Forell has joined the teaching faculty full-time The assistant dean positions, formerly half-time, became full-time July 1. Gordon was in private practice in Eugene until this spring, most recently as a partner in the firm Leistner, Gordon and Vallerand Her concentrations have been in Indian law, non-profit organization, business, and family and juvenile law. In November 1981, she was appointed to the Lane County Selective Service Board. She was named a "Trail Blazer" by the Willamette Valley Observer in January 1981 for community service and leadership Gordon received her law degree from the University law school and was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1977. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Stan ford University in 1973 Nagae came to her new post from the Portland law firm of Nagae, Nash and Hoarfrost. She previously had a solo practice, splitting her time between general practice and representing indigent Native Americans. During that time, she also served as coordinator of the affirmative action program for Lewis and Clark College’s Northwestern School of Law, administering summer programs and tutorial services for ethnic law students. Nagae currently is vice president of the Japanese Amer ican Citizens League, as well as a board member of the Volunteer Lawyers' Project in Portland. She received her law degree from the Northwestern School of Law in 1977. She received her bachelor's degree in Asian studies from Vassar College in 1973.
