I Hayward Field | 15th Avenue and Agate Street If one tends to have an active imagination while one is slogging along, Hayward could just be the most delightful place to mentally grasp the thrill of victory The site of the Olympic Track and Field Trials for 1972, ’76 and '80, as well as many world class races, the ghosts of tens of thousands of rabid track fans can take Joe Schmutz from his daily run to The Moment. Like most running places around Eugene, including the good old pavement, Hayward is where Joe can mix with Alberto, even if he can’t keep up. Even it the track is behind the main grandstand at Hayward, even if it is cinder and even if no one has had the decency to give it an official name yet, "the other track" is a decent place to log some miles For those intimidated by Hayward's big time rep or for those who seek refuge on an uncrowded course, "the other track" fits the bill. It also maintains the same hours as Hayward South Eugene High School East 19th Avenue and Patterson Street South has a rubber asphalt, all-weather track that almost connects to the beginning of the trails at Amazon Park If one desires some track work with trail work mixed in (or vice-versa).
