Wingard relies on record, not party By David Steinmetz Of th« Emerald Republican Sen George Wingard's voting record has earned an 85 percent approval rating from the Lane County Democratic Party. While his new opponent in the November election, first-term Democratic Rep Margie Hen driksen, earned a 100 percent rating from her party. Wingard hopes to meet Hendriksen's challenge by pointing out their differences on issues rather than in party af filiation to the voters in his Democrat-dominated district. “I’rp not a knee-jerk party person. I've gotten a lot of sup port from both Democrats and Republicans over the years.” he says "Democrats generally support me when they find out what I've done .” The record he wants to em phasize includes writing or chief sponsorship of "the most pro gressive energy conservation building code in the nation," the "strongest permit system for air and water pollution in the na tion," and a thermonuclear sit ing bill instituting a "long and arduous" siting process He was similarly instrumental in tax form and bureaucratic simplification bills, and co-sponsored the bill granting bike path construction His low-key style made him decide to spend time with Gov Vic Atiyeh, telling him "higher education is the best business we’ve got,” rather than with the Legislature's budget-writing Ways and Means Committee, he says.
