English prof
given grant
for research
Donald S. Taylor, a University
English professor, is among 97
scholars from all over the nation
this year to be awarded a
grant-in-aid for post-doctoral
research from the American
Council of Learned Societies
His research will focus on the
relevance of R. G. Colling
wood's artistic and historical
thought to literary history and
criticism.
Taylor, who earned his
doctoral degree at the Universi
ty of California. Berkeley, in
1950, came to the University in
1968. Before coming to Eugene,
he was director of graduate
students in English at the
University of Washington
In 1972, Taylor received a
fellowship from the John Simon
Guggenheim Memorial Foun
dation. Taylor used that fellow
ship to work on a literary history
of the 18th century English
writer Tomas Chatterton. He did
his reseach at Oxford University
in England
Taylor edited "The Complete
Works Of Thomas Chatterton,"
published in 1971.
Taylor has also been awarded
a $2,500 University Faculty Re
search Award this summer to
study Collingwood's theories
The American Council of
Learned Societies' grants have
been made available by dona
tions from the Ford Foundation
and the National Endowment for
the Humanities.
