Bach Festival's success prompts move Musicians from around the world gathered at the University to perform in the 1982 Oregon Bach Festival. The festival, judging by the crowds, was an all-around success — so suc cessful that next year, the fes tival will extend beyond just the campus. Held for 13 years at the University, part of next year's event will move from Beall Con cert Hall to Eugene s new Performing Arts Center Beall Hall is too small to seat the sizable increase in the fes tival audience, says Henriette Heiny, festival assistant direc tor. Some cantatas and the major concerts will be moved to the 2,500-seat Performing Arts Center, she says The noon recitals, classes, teaching school, afternoon perfor mances and other cantatas will remain at the University. A special concert may be performed in southern Califor nia after the 1983 festival, Heiny adds Although this proposal has not been finalized, a special performance would give the festival more exposure and publicity, she says. "But Oregon is the festival’s home base and will remain its home base,” Heiny stresses The 1983 Festival runs from June 24 to July 3. but a specific agenda for the 14th festival has yet to be mapped out The 1982 festival featured daily performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other classical composers Events also included the Bach Supper, a Bach cantata series, a critic's institute and the new noon concerts No box office tallies have been compiled yet, but the number of festival goers in creased significantly over past figures, Heiny says. All the evening concerts sold out By the third afternoon of the festival, the cantatas sold out, not the case iri previous years. The 500-seat Beall Hall enter tained standing-room-only crowds for many of the other recitals, including the noon concerts The Festival closed on July 11 with “St. Matthew's Passion." performed by the San Francisco Boys' Chorus and conducted by “Bach expert" Helmut Rilling Corvallis police expand search for suspect in robbery-homocide Corvallis police are expanding the search for a su spect in a June 10 homicide to Eugene The suspect is alleged to have shot and killed Gregory Kirkelie while robbing Kirkelie's store The suspect is described as olive-complected, approximate ly 30-years old, slender build, about 5 ft 10 inches tall, with a receding hairline, moustache and wire-rimmed or rim-less glasses Corvallis police are asking for assistance from the public.
