The Yankee Clipper Smeede Hotel 767 Willamette flfr djr*' Rallies fete ERA efforts Local women's political organizations are planning two rallies and a march Thursday to commemorate efforts to pass the Equal Rights Amendment Federal, state and local politicians will speak at the rallies on a wide variety of issues, says Chris Mahoney, human rights specialist for the City of Eugene. The deadline for approval of the proposed amendment to the federal constitution is Wednesday. Only 34 states, including Oregon, have approved the amendment, three short of the required majority. "The rallies are something that need to happen for all the people who’ve dedicated a lot of effort on this particular issue," says Mahoney Despite the setback, she says, the women in the movement have learned about themselves and the political system "tremendously," gaining strength and support "It appears that, for now, this effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment is dead,” says County Commissioner Scott Lieuallen He will address a noon rally with remarks on “human rights in general — particularly the need to not collapse that effort in the face of what's regarded as a conservative tide " Cynthia Wooten, Eugene city councilor, will emphasize “concentrating on the successes that we've had in Oregon and the hopefulness of not giving up the struggle in the future" to rally participants. Also appearing at the noon rally will be Mary Wendy Roberts, state labor commissioner, and Sweet Grass, a three-woman band The one-hour rallies will begin at noon and 7:30 p.m at the Eighth and Oak Street entrance to the Lane County Public Service Building Congressman Jim Weaver, state Rep Margie Hendriksen, state Sen. Ruth McFarland and state Sen. Ted Kulongoski, Democratic candidate for governor, will speak at the evening rally A two-and-a-half mile march around down town Eugene will depart from the rally site at 8:30 p.m Sponsors urge march participants and sup porters to bring a candle and wear white clothing "In all of the suffragette movements, right from the early 1900s, the participants have dressed in white," Mahoney says Sponsors for the event are The Eugene Commission on the Rights of Women, which conducts city lobbying efforts on women's rights issues in the state legislature, the Oregon Women’s Political Caucus and the Lane County branch of the National Organization of Women For more information about the events, call Chris Mahoney at 687-5010 I Classifieds BIJOU 492 E 13th 686-BlJU S*jft Thur» 7 SO AdmnMX> 3 00 EUGENE PREMIERE SISSY SPACEK ^ApCEDYM*N MgMy 7 ?0 & 9 45 SaL, Sun.
