Music in the air Eugene Parks and Recreation presents a panorama of over 100 free summer concerts and performances With the con certs the Cultural Arts Division of Parks and Recreation hopes to reach the “untraditional con cert goer by bringing concerts where those folks might show up,” says Suzanne Pepin, the division supervisor. The summer entertainment began June 13 at the Rhododendron Garden in Hen dricks Park with an appearance by Eugene s Emerald Chamber Players. It runs through August 29 The 47 concerts and perfor mances are scheduled to in clude folk, jazz, and rock, plus occasional mime, dance, and juggling shows. Sunday performances will be at Hendricks, Monroe, Universi ty, Washburne and Westmor eland Parks. The Thursday evening performances will take place in Amazon Park. Concerts with amplified mu sic will be held only in Skinner Butte Park. This is to prevent any disturbance amplified mu sic might cause in residential areas. The schedule, now available at Parks and Recreation com munity centers throughout Eugene and at the main office, includes frequent appearences by the Chamber Players, a con cert with the Northwest's Whis key Creek Band, a “contra dance” with the Oregon Country Dance Orchestra, a Folk Festival and Spaghetti Feed, among other activities. Summer Showcase’s Seventh season, managed by the Lane Regional Arts Council, opened on June 14 and continues through Sept. 9 The free performances start each weekday at noon They feature a wide range of enter tainment ranging from mimes Bimbo and Kazoo, guitarist Gary Parks, jazz dance group Oslund and Company jazz dance, to folk musicians The Tree People, among others. To secure performances from Musician's Association per formers, who are more highly paid than unaffiliated per formers, Parks and Recreation matched funds from union Local No. 689 to co-sponsor 10 concerts In addition, the Eugene Folklore Society is co sponsoring nine performances Parks and Recreation is putting city room tax funds toward fin ancing the events.
