Deadlenins challenge KZEL to a rematch
The outlook wasn't brilliant for
the Deadlenins that day:
The score stood too much to too
little with but one inning more to
play
And then when Portal died at
first, and Healy did the same.
A sickly silence fell upon the
patrons of the game.
A straggling few got up to go in
deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which
springs eternal in the human
breast.
They thought if only Casey
could but get a whack at that —
We'd put up even money now
with Casey at the bat.

WHEN THE GOING
GETS ROUGH.
Hitting the books? Feeling the strain?
Take a Vivarin. Vivarin is a medically
tested stimulant tablet.Taken as
directed, it’s safe and
effective.
Its active ingredient is
caffeine. It’s like two cups
of coffee squeezed into
one little tablet.
Whether you're cram
ming, typing, or just hitting
the books, take Vivarin.
You’ll stay alert for hours.

Even mighty Casey couldn't
have helped the Emerald's
softball ten (Deadlenins) in their
first match with KZEL's awe
some diamond-persons They
handily put the eager Deadlen
ins down 15 to 7. Shamefaced,
the Deadlenins shuffled off the
dusty field suffering the jeers of
Hardly Worthit, the incestuous
Siamese twins Dave Kanner
Dan Clark, and a host of other
disreputable FM radio-types
But since that dismal perfor
mance the Deadlenins have re
turned to life, defeating the
Masterbatters 17 to 4 and
roundly trouncing the
Register-Guard's team by the
score of 27 to 9 In a doub
leheader with the Springfield
News Sunday, Deadlenins
downed the “Newsers" 12 to
zip. and 12 to 3
And now a rematcn wan
is in the offing — and the Dead
lenins are chomping at the bit.
Deadlenins' manager, Ger
man-Rastafarian Hans Healy,
says, “Hey, day was lucky, to
talfie Next time no no no
we gash'em good We be awe
some, mon " The grudge match
is set for 6:30 p.m Wednesday
on one of the University
intramural fields Spectators are
not usually unwelcome
After Wednesday it will be
K2EL who recites:
Oh! somewhere in this favored
land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere,
and somewhere hearts are light.
And somewhere men are
laughing, and somewhere chil
dren shout;
But there is no joy in FM-land —
mighty KZEL has struck out.
ESCAPE directorship
awarded to Blankinship
DeShauna Blankinship, a
senior in English, has been
selected as director of ESCAPE
for the 1982-83 academic year
ESCAPE, whose name is an
acronym for Every Student Car
ing About Personalized Educa
tion, is a student-run program
involving about 1.200 students
per year The program offers
credit for work in schools,
student programs and the com
munity
Blankinship, who has been
involved in the organization for
a year-and-a-half, says she ap
plied for the job because of her
commitment to the organiza
tion’s programs and belief in the
"goals and philosophies of the
program "
Because the program is dir
ected by a 15-member steering
committee, she says that the
director cannot personally ef
fect many changes — but that
she doesn't plan on making
changes anyway
The program's goal next year
will be "continuing to offer the
same things that we are now''
and producing "not so much
changes as growth,” Blankin
ship says
As for funding cuts totaling 24
percent in the last two years,
she says that “we took a pretty
good cut I can't say that's its
not going to hurt us but we re
still going strong ”
"It’s not going to jeopardize
the program in terms of what we
offer students," Blankinship
says, adding that the program
will simply have to econ
omize.”
ESCAPE students next year
will also strive to "make
the community and campus
more aware of the kinds of
things we offer," she
says
