Meanwhile. Dean Crouser continues to excel in the discus and shot put for Oregon. On Wednesday, he heaved the discus 208-0, the best qualifying mark of the day, to qualify for Friday’s final. His 67-11 throw in Thursday’s shotput, the No 2 qualifying mark, put him into the finals of that event While Dean remained a favor ite to win both of his events, brother Brian emerged as a valid contender in the javelin. He threw a lifetime best of 274-2 to finish second in qualifying and move into the finals. In ad dition. Crouser's throw set an American Junior record in the javelin. In the distances, Jim Hill and Bill McChesney both qualified for the finals in their respective events. Hill finished third in his 1500 meter heat with a time of 3:45.08 and McChesney was second in his heat of the 5000 meters with a 14:14 04 clocking. However, Walcott came back to run a blazing 10.32 in the 100 meters, another personal best, finishing second in his heat, ninth overall, and qualifying for the consolation final, which awards points to the 7th-12th place finishers under the new NCAA scoring format. There were a few other non qualifiers for the Ducks, the most unfortunate being sprinter George Walcott Walcott ran a personal best of 20.78 in the 200 meters, but the only prize he received was that of being the fastest non-qualifier, as his time place him fifth in the fourth and fastest heat For the women, junior Eryn Forbes has been the brightest star Forbes put 12 points on the board for Oregon with a solid 33:59.10 time in the 10,000 meters, good for second place Thursday, she won her heat of the 5000 meters with a 16:42.74 clocking to qualify for the finals Joining Forbes in the finals of the 5000 will be Kathy Hayes, who ran a 16:55.85 to finish third in her heat In the 1500 meters, Leann Warren won a spot in the finals by winning her heat with a time of 4:23:09, and she came back Thursday to qualify for the 800 meter finals with a time of 2:05.26. set tor tne iduu consolation final is Claudette Qroenendaal, who had a 4:39.56. and in the 800 final is Ranza Clark, who finished third in her heat with a 2:05.56. The throwing events have been a source of elation and disappointment for women's coach Tom Heinonen. The ela tion stems from the javelin, where all three of Oregon's throwers — Lynda Hughes, Sally Harmon and Roz Rouse — qualified for the finals. The disappointment was in the discus, where neither Karen McDonald nor Quenna Beasley reached the finals. Still, the most disappointed Duck had to be junior Lexie Miller. Counted on for big points in the 400-meter and 100-meter hurdles, Miller was disqualified from the 400 meter finals for dragging her leg over a hurdle, f 37C0PY !
