The long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault are in the domain of the southern teams — the Ducks are outclassed in these events Here then is a rundown of those events, and the names to watch in all four. LONG JUMP — Arizona State's LaMonte King was last year's Pac-10 winner with a 26-1 leap, and if he can shake off a recent leg injury, he will be a threat for Pac-10, as well as NCAA honors However, UCLA’s Chip Benson has the con ference's top jump this year with a wind-aided 25-11, just ahead of King's 25-10. Other threats include Sam Jenkins of Arizona (third a year ago), UCLA's Dokie Williams, and USC's Ed Tave, who has a wind-aided 25-10 this year. Hal Myers' 23-2 leap led Oregon this year, but he didn't meet the Pac-10 qualifying standard of 25-3 1 /4. POLE VAULT — Again. Oregon has not qualified any competitors for this event, and again, it is an event dominated by competitors from the southern schools. The one obstacle to southern dominance in the pole vault is Oregon State's Shannon Sullivan, last year's winner with a 17-6 1/4 vault, and owner of a 17-7 vault this year. Sullivan will be severely tested by UCLA's Anthony Curran. Curran, ranked sixth in the U S last year, has cleared 17-8 this year, and he was the NCAA runner-up last year with a 17-4 1/4 mark. Other names to watch are David Ken worthey of USC, who has gone 17-9 3/4, and Ross McAlexander, who has a 17-5 3/4 mark HIGH JUMP — Oregon has qualified Dave Howard and Bill Abbott for this event, and one of the two may be able to sneak in for points Abbott picked up two points for the Ducks last year with a fifth-place finish, and Howard’s 7-0 1/4 season best makes him an additional point-threat Washington State’s Brent Harken is the man to beat, having won last year’s title with a 7-2 1 /4 leap, and owning a leap of 7-5 this year UCLA's Del Davis, with a jump of 7-3 1/2 this spring, ASU's Deon Mayfield (7-3) and Arizona's James Frazier (the 1979 Pac-10 winner) are Harken s competition. TRIPLE JUMP — The Ducks will be without school record-holder Lamar Hurd in this event Hurd seemed a sure bet to qualify for the Pac-10 triple jump at the beginning of the season, but Emerald photo With the Ducks’ best jumper, Lamar Hurd, out with an Injury, Oregon doesn’t look to be a factor In the jumps. injuries have slowed his progress This appears to be the closest of the jumping events, as any one of four athletes could win “— UCLA’s Williams was second in the Pac-10 last year and has a jump of 54-2 1 /2 this spring; Mayfield, third in the Pac-10 last year, has a best of 54-10 1 /4; WSU's Joseph Taiwo was second in the NCAAs last year and has a 1982 best of 54-7 1 /2; and UCLA's Benson has soared 54-2 1 /2 this spring Those four will be in a dogfight for first While it is very possible that Oregon will be shut out in these four events, coach Bill Dellinger is hoping that Howard and Abbott can steal a few points in the high jump.
