Students honored with awards By Ann Portal Otttw Emtrmk) Outstanding students and liv ing groups have been recog nized at various luncheons and banquets over the past week, with several new scholarships awarded to undergraduate students. Ann Maguigan, a junior majoring in telecommunication, is the recipient of the Bess Templeton Cristman Award. Co-winners of the Maurice Harold Hunter Leadership Scholarship are John Dulclch, a junior accounting major, and R. Patrick Hanlin. a junior finance and rhetoric major. This award honors the junior man whose achievements and good exam ple have helped develop leadership qualities in other students Deborah Hauger a senior in ternational studies and Spanish major, is this year's winner of the AAUW Senior Woman Recognition Award Given by the American Association of University Women, the award recognizes a graduating senior woman for her scholarship, character, personality, con tributions to campus and com munity life, and potential for future achievement. Recipient of the Koyl Cup is Jeffrey Nudelman a junior poli tical science major. The award is given to the junior man who demonstrates well-rounded development of his leadership, citizenship and academic skills Elizabeth Mann, a junior journalism major, is the recipient of the Gerlinger Cup, which honors a junior woman for her scholarship, leadership and service to the University Winning the Doyle Higdon Memorial Trophy is Eugene "Choo Choo" Young, top punt returner for the University foot ban team and a junior elemen tary education major. The award recognizes a University student-athlete for excellence in athletics, scholarship and ci tizenship. Winner of the Emerald Athle tic Award is Bav Smith, a two time Kodak all-American and a senior physical education major The award honors achievements in athletics, ser vice and scholarship Earning the Burt Brown Barker Vice Presidential cups for living groups with the high est undergraduate grade point indices were Alpha Delta Pi 8 p.m. Robinson Theatre 686-4191 For Tickets & Information sorority and Philadelphia House, a men’s cooperative. The women of Alpha Delta PI compiled a 2.907 GPI — which differs from the traditional grade point average in that “N” grades are taken into account. The men of Philadelphia House rated a 2.914 GPI. The University Mother's recently gave eight students scholarships for the 1982-83 academic year. Douglas Brenneman, a psy chology major, received the $1,000 Golda Parker Wickham Award Diane Bleak, an anthropology major, and Leslie Manning, a geology major, received natural history museum scholarships of $1,000 for next year. Finance major George Hos fleid, physical education major Karen Shepard, pre-business student Marcia Wilkinson, and computer science major JoZell Johnson all received $500 awards from the Mother's Club based on financial need, high scholarship and community service. The first recipient of the George W. Cherry Speech Scholarship is Richard Poulin, a rhetoric and communication major. Poulin earned the scholarship by placing first in a recent campus-wide speech contest. The University Parents As sociation awarded its first merit scholarship to Tracy Lawrence, a junior majoring in internation al studies, based on her scholarship, leadership ability, motivation and contributions to the University and the commun ity. Thirteen students and five faculty members have been ad ded to The Society of Friars, one of the most prestigious honor aries at the University. Among those inducted into the Friars are University Pres. Paul Olum and recently elected ASUO Pres. C J. Balfe. Students selected for Friars membership are leaders who give promise of future leader ship as citizens and have a deep loyalty to the University, ac cording to Bob Bowlin, dean of students. Besides Olum, faculty members selected for honorary membership include Anth ropology Prof. Vernon Oorjahn; Architecture Prof. Gaorga Hodga. English Prof. Barbara Mossberg; and Keith Richard, University archivist. The 13 students chosen as Friars include accounting major John Dulcich; psychology major C.J. Balfa; political science major Alan Contreras; general science major Michael Walter; pre-journalism major Vincson Green; telecommun ications major Ann Magulgan; political science major Jeffrey Nudelman; economics major Daniel Cohen; pre-business major David Gibson; and psy chology major Lisa Sandau. Also selected as Friars were pre-journalism major Elizabeth Mann; pre-major DeShauna Blankinshlp; and rhetoric and communcation major Jana McLellan.
