Ducks cruii with Crou Dean and Brian weigh heavily By Steve Turcotte Ot m» emerald There are a few facts already known about this year's weight events for Oregon at the Pacific 10 Track and Field Meet. Fact One: Dean Crouser will win the shot put. Fact Two: Dean Crouser will win the discus Fact Three: Brian Crouser will score high in the javelin. Fact Four: Kent Landerholm and/or Dean Crouser should score in the hammer. With these predictions taken into account, Oregon weight Coach Ray Burton thinks the Ducks can fare well in the four weight events. "I think we can score maybe 36 points in the four events,” __.a. ai» a _ a: _ _ r> _ i predicts Burton, the one-time Duck weightman "We will pick up some good points along the way But 36 points would be very, very impressive." It's not that unusual to have someone who can win maybe one weight event, but someone who can handily win two events is unique And the Ducks have someone like that in Dean Crouser "It should be a cakewalk tor Dean in the shot and discus," says Burton. "We'll have him train through the meet.” "I think I could lift the day of the meet and still win." says Crouser One person who would push Crouser to the limit would have been Cal's Dave Porath, if he was competing But the Cal weightman decided to red shirt this year and make next year his final collegiate season But now, Crouser has plenty of room being able to boast as he beat the likes of Brian Oldfield and Al Feuerbach in the shot put at the Modesto Belays last Sa turday with a toss which was under his previous best of 68-3%. The four teams who should battle it out for the Pac-10 championship — UCLA. Oregon, Washington State and Arizona State — have people in the weight events who could score big points Oregon has the Crouser brothers and Kent Landerholm, Arziona State has Gary Williky in the shot and discus, UCLA has John Brenner in the shot and discus, the Cougars have Tore Gustafson in the javelin and Laslo Babits in the javelin. SHOT PUT — Dean Crouser may have a little company at the top. Sun Devil Williky tossed the shot 68-2V4 on May 8 and may prove to be a contender But Crouser has been con sistent all year long "I feel really confident," says Dean, who is the elder of the two Crousers. "I need to get a little more consistent, though But I think I can go out every time and expect 67-feet." Oragon’s Frode Stormyr, who hat a bast ot 253-10, would ba a contandar In tha la vailn, but a sort a!bow has hamparad his throwing lataly. Burton feels that Dean shouldn’t have too much difficulty in capturing the shot "Dean's technique is looking better all the time,” says Burton. "I wouldn't be surprised to see him set a personal best ” After Crouser and Williky, the field drops to Brenner who has a toss of 64-8. And after that, the marks drop off even more. Overall, eight competitors in the shot have qualified for the Pac-10 meet, and only five for the national meet in Provo. But the shot should still provide some excitement. DISCUS — Once again, the word here is Dean Crouser. Crouser, whose best throw of 208-3, is eight feet better than anyone else, is head and shoulders above the Pac-10 in the discus. "If I can correct one part of my technique, I think I can add 10 feet to my throws,” Dean says. “I need to get the consistency. I have been aiming for consis tency all year. ” "Everyone should be playing for seconds and thirds,” says the Oregon weight coach. "I think a throw from 185 to 190 feet should take seconds.” Washington’s Doug Woolen is second at 200-9, but his throw was recorded early in the year and Burton and Crouser don’t expect him to be much of a factor. Williky at 197-4 and Ron Schmidt of Oregon State at 195-2 are expected to give Crouser his main competition. After those people, there are a handful in the 180-foot range. HAMMER — Washington State’s Tore Gustafson should have no trouble in winning the hammer throw. His throw of 222-10, is far and away the best in the conference. In fact, the next best throw after his is Stanford’s Sean Pickering at 207-9. Another Cougar, Ed VandeVoorde is third with a mark of 205-6 and those are the only people with throws of over 200-feet. ’’Gustafson is in a class by himself,” says Burton. "The only was he could get beat is if he has an extremely bad day.” Oregon has its hopes in Kent Lan derholm and Dean Crouser. Landerd holm’s mark of 197-1 ranks him fifth in the conference while Crouser’s toss of 195-6 puts him seventh. Crouser has rarely thrown the hammer this year and his 195-6 was recorded way back in March. “I wouldn't be surprised to see Kent throw over 200 feet,7 inches," says Bur ton. “He is really peaking at the right time.” JAVELIN — This should be the most exciting of all the weight events. There are at least five throwers who could walk away with the javelin championship. Washington State's Laslo Babits has the league's top mark at 268-11 while Oregon's Brian Crouser is second at 265-0. "I have had a technique change in the last month and it has really helped me,” says the younger of the two brothers. “I have been throwing consis tently as a result. “I knew I could do it, it was just a matter of time before I started throwing far. It's unreal.” WILDERNESS QUARTER Bacfccountry Field Studies August 2 - 24 5 units High Sierra Natural History The Alpine Wilderness Nature Writing August 30 November 4; 15 units Yosemite Wilderness John Muir Wilderness Wilderness Journal Bacfccnuntry Hawaii (9/17-11 /22) fi WMdenmm Studies .
