Rust, then Kulongski Down stale it will be Kulongski Rust and Clark Jerry will carry the maiorrty ot all student votes cast statewide but the student turnout will very kght as usual Because ol the way things are set up right now. the winner of Lane County will wm the election And the reason I am writing is because the votes on this campus could very easily carry Lane County and hence grve Jerry the victory we all so badly need Because ol my position. I have been able to keep abreast ot every major pronouncement by each ol the three candidates On the surface it has been made to appear that the simSartlies between the candidates are more numerous than the differences On dose evaluation, the differences become so striking that there realty is only one way tor the progressive Oregonian Only Jatry Rust haft been an admanant opponent ot ail things nuclear tor all of his adult life Only Jerry has committed hanaett to fight tor letmtnalion of a» WPPSS plants Only Jerry hae commuted himself to tight to decommit, sion Trotan Only Jerry has committee himself to tight tor an equitable resolution ot the nuclear debt problem m Oregon Only Jerry e firmly m suppon ot public power And this last is more important than it might seam because me concept ot privately held utilities being given a monopoly to supply services to people el a profit when the people can do ft tor themselves, at a tourer coat, is as bankrupt as the concept ot nudeer power The leader e not the person who says the word the most forcefully but rather the person who contains an accurate view of future world and can and will give the guidance that .will make n attainable The mator issue ot our time is peace Jerry has been a peace activist tor at least 15 years The other candidates have become bitten by the peace bug but but consistency says atot about depth ot committment Oregonians need to work Clark proposes public works |Obs lor which there are no tunds Kutongoaki proposes jobs croation tax credits winch are nothing more man public works with the government giving money to the private employer before it goes to the employee That and reliance on private industry "contribu tions Teddy would have us go to two empty cookie jars instead ot just one but the results would be the same Jerry alone has vowed to light lor creation of a state bank to provide economic development capital Jerry alone has a specific program ol tax incentives mat will encourage the burgeoning new photovoitaics industry to seek out Oregon as its home This tax proposal cost us nothing because it is targeted only to an industry wmch does not currently exist here And most importantly, only Jerry can and will strive to make worker participation in the ownership ol me means ol production a priority in the future ol Oregon s economic development In a (Oint appearance before the Portland Town Couancil, only Jerry was willing to make any specific committments m me area ol gay rights Jerry alone has made a specific com mittment toward sexual equality in slate government appointments Jerry has signed the only written committment to work lor the veterans rights that will finally allow us to heal the last wounds ot the Vietnam war Rust is alone in his adamant opposition to anylhing and everything that will poison Oregon s people with dioxins In your striving for education you must have learned that the future will not be like the past and, il we try |o make it so, there will be no future Jerry Rust is the first and only major candidate in our nation that has both the ability to discern the parameters ot the future and the skills and committment to overcome me ener gies that will be directed against his work We are the only people in history who have had to work for the right to have a future Before us it was guaianteed Now it is not And it will not happen by accident Can Jerry Rust wirth You will determine the outcome of the primary In the general election it there is no economic development even Archie could beat Atiyeh But It there is any improvemnl al all Teddy will be in the same position as he was against Packwood and he will lose He hasn't enough excitement to btmg the hippies trom the woods and doesn t otter enough difference to make a change worthwhile Only Jerry Rust has the positions and has made the committments that will require Atiyeh to make a stand on the issues He will have no room to squirm and when the Continued on Pag* 7
