SUAB seeks lower bus fares, questions “cheating” ruling If the Student University Affairs Board has its way, students could be paying less to ride Lane Transit District buses. Recent fare increases and area economic problems have apparently forced students to use other means than riding Lane Transit District buses to get to school. LTD now wants to offer three monthly passes for $36 to students, faculty and staff good for rides anywhere in the Eugene Springfield area. Gale Graham, 1981-82 chairer, told the 1982-83 Board. At it's May 7 meeting, SUAB proposed that LTD subsidize $5 of each pass while the Univer sity kicks in an additional $4. This would amount to an average cost of 30 cents a ride rather than the present 50 cents. "Lane Transit has offered this program to the students at Lane Community College and it has been very successful,” Graham said. "We asked if it would be possible here and they said ‘sure.’ ” SUAB also decided to distribute ridership questionnaires in faculty mailboxes, at the SUAB booth in the EMU and at the LTD bus stop across I from University Bookstore to help determine the amount of support the reduced fare program would receive. "It would certainly be a logical move on the part of the University to see if busing will reduce parking problems on campus,” Graham said. LTD used to sell more than 500 monthly passes to students before the last rate hike, he said. Now it sells around 300 passes. The only thing holding up the reduced fare program is the University administration, Graham said. Graham also told the new members a ques tion has been raised whether faculty can give a failing course grade to students guilty of academic dishonesty. The University Assembly recently approved a resolution allowing instruc tors to give failing grades to all students caught cheating on tests. “We’re not against punishing the person for cheating,” Graham said. “But we are aginst using grades as a form of punishment.” 1 Spring Clearance Bargains! 20% Off Mugs Glasses Pillows Pennants Stadium Seats Frisbees (T-shirt Dept, not included, T-shirts are on sale at our Sidewalk Sale!)
