No. 7 is a 566 ft., par 5, straight shot from Oregon the do-it-yourself athlete ‘Golfers’ take sport seriously "They call themselves Frisbee-golfers - ha! You can’t fool an old fool like me They aren't golfers these were the dreaded Frissbee-as sassins (C.F., ODE, 4:27:82) Just who are these “Frisbee-assassins" that have been marauding the campus grounds, and what are they doing? How the sport came to be on campus is disputed, but the most likely story is that trans planted enthusiasts from the East Coast or Southern California began a primitive course on campus using landmarks as “holes Unknown yet enterprising players have since painted yellow guide stripes on the lamp posts around campus, and the “holes have become generally accepted Contrary to what seems to be a popular notion, the object is to hit the posts - not pedes trians - below the yellow stripe and above the lower ring Aspects of frisbee golf parallel those of con ventional golf Mild exercise, sightseeing and competition are offered along with the usual frustrations of getting a bad lie, hitting a tree and missing a putt. An array of frisbees have been marketed, and are as various as a set of golf clubs Many fervent players travel the course wifh a pack full of different discs, each for a different purpose Generally, the heavier the disc, the easier it is to control. But those who are less committed to the sport usually find a 165 gram disc works best for most conditions. Frisbee golf rules, two and one-half pages of them, can be picked up at the Recreation and Intramural office in 103 Gerlinger along with a map of all 18-holes The course is a 2,149 yard, 65-par jaunt through campus The course begins on the hill of the grassy area between the EMU and Carson Hall, and the first hole is played to the ’lamppost of the south east entrance of the EMU The course meanders south to the area across the street from Leighton Pool, west towards Susan Campbell and then turns north in line past Chapman Hall all the way to the Law School From there the course goes around the back of Villard and turns south from there clear down to Hendricks Hall The ninth hole tee is on the mound by the southeast entrance of the EMU, while the hole is on the other side of Carson Hall by the bicycle racks, a five-par hole The back nine basically retraces the first nine holes in reverse order, with some variations Probably the most popular 'hole'’ is the 96-yard, 3-par, 17th Players ' tee-off' on the mound on the southwest corner of the EMU and fire their discs over the parking lot With some luck, the disc lands on the south side of the hedges that line the lot The trick is to clear the cars and the hedge in one shot to line up in position for a two-putt to the post. The next RIM sponsored tournaments will be May 18, with deadline for entry by 5 p.m on May 17 The’tournaments will incorporate teams of two with a selection of nine and 18 hole tournaments, and novice or advanced skill levels Jobs and Livability — A Winning Combination Dan Goldrich Professor of political science '71s a member of VLN and the university com munity, I support candidates who are com mitted to community control and strong neigh borhoods.
