letters Kudos Timely, accurate, insightful, extremely useful are words that apply to the Emerald’s April 23, special report Careers '82: Jobs and Uncertainty.” Congratula tions Ann Portal, Marian Green, and Harry Esteve for an excellent job Larry Smith Director, Career Planning and Placamant Sarvlce Another OSU? During the 1960s and '70s, the University and its students became known for their concern with national and international issues Their activism indicated a belief that the student's world does not end at the edge of cam pus This contrasted sharply with the behavior of the students of Oregon State University during those years I have always felt that the state of Oregon was privileged to have such diversity among its two major universities: that somewhere there lies a balanced perspective when one compares the attitudes prevalent at both schools C.J Balfe's recent election as ASUO president over Kevin Kouns would seem to indicate a change in perspective among the University student body. Apparently, recent budget cuts have caused a majority of the students to be concerned with the University’s finances and little else If this is true. I am saddened by the state's loss Are we becoming another OSU? Store Schmlck M B A., marketing No respect It is spring time again and everybody is getting active People are playing softball, tennis, basketball and a game that n is getting no respect. This game is frisbee goif Fnsbee golf is a game played all over the campus grounds. One problem this game is encounter ing is that people are lying all over the fairways, the many open grass areas around our university. People picking up the frisbees after they have been thrown is another mounting concern of the frisbee golfers. Does this happen on golf courses? No People don’t pick golf balls and toss them back to the players and also people don't lie all over the courses These problems can be solved If people would just stay off the fairways and keep their paws off the frisbees, the frisbee association of golfers will be able to play their sport with the respect other sports get Don Walden F.A.G. Biker racers Shaved legs are practically enough to cause an inferiority complex in any University bike racer If this complex doesn't drive them to the mental hospital, lack of student support surely will Your incidental fee is not enough to save them, but your body is. They cry out for cheers, and applause at their races This Sunday you will have a chance to yell for twenty young and impressionable University cyclists during their annual cam pus race Besides them, there will be over a hundred other shaved legged competitors racing for glory and two hundred dollars in prizes. They will risk life and limb reaching speeds of forty miles an hour around the turn from University St. to 13th only inches from other bikes The course is eight-tenths of a mile long (starting and ending on 15th a cross from the covered tennis courts), and is completed by the racers in less than two minutes The first race is sixteen miles which begins at eleven o'clock. The eight mile novice race starts at twelve (anyone can enter), fol lowed by the thirty-two mile main event at one. Please come, sit anywhere around the course, and experience the fast and colorful sport of bike racing. If this isn’t enough, come to save twenty young Ducks from straight jackets and padded cells. Doug Rappoport captain, University cycling club Distorted view The portrait painted by the Register-Guard in "Portland, the Law, and Dean Bell" (April 17) was distorted, incomplete, biased, and racist. It was incomplete because it failed to print or adequately summarize Dean Bell's remarks which appeared in the Oregonian (April 15). Dean Bell merely said that the problem which exists in Portland is similar to the problem which has always existed when Black children and parents seek quality education — they are ig nored and disregarded. Black parents had worked closely with the Portland school district and had agreed on a course of action which was responsive to Black children. The unresponsiveness of the board, according to Dean Bell, led the parents to engage in protest which many find uncom fortable The portrait painted in the Register-Guard did not contribute to respect and equality among the races in Oregon. Nor did it con tribute to a heightened understanding of the racial and educational problems which exist in our fair state Instead, the edi torial distorted the controversy and urged Oregonians to disregard the legitimate grievances of its Black citizens Edwin L.
