Senate moves to separate j linguistics Ph.D. program The University's linguistics department took the first step toward approving a transfer of its doctoral program from the English department into the lin guistics department at a meeting of the University Senate Wednesday afternoon The Senate approved a recommenda tion to the University Assembly without a dissenting vote and two abstentions The program will join the exist ing undergraduate and master's degree without adding any addi tional faculty, staff or costs The department was formed in 1976 when faculty were taken from the English and romance languages departments and the program has offered BAs and MAs since 1971. The Ph D., how ever, was still retained in the English department "This is the last step in pulling out of the English department," said Collette Craig, an associate professor. Craig presented the proposal to about 35 people at the meeting. "Because the degree is in the English department, the students have to conform to some English requirements that may not be necessary,” Craig said. Of the five candidates only one’s dissertation has to do with English, she added. "On paper, the degree is from us,” Craig said, "but in effect it’s handled by the English department.” "This will avoid the double layer of administration.” Some of the senate members expressed concern that "no-cost transfers,” in the past, have ended up with a substantial price tag It was decided that no guarantee could be made against incurring costs. iimiiiiiiiiM Continued from miiiiiimn beaches should be open or closed year-round On March 20, Wood said, a state police officer from Florence did a radar speed check for 1V? hours on the South Jetty Beach The tide was high and about 500 people were on the beach, Wood said This figure brought instantaneous laughter from the many ORV enthusiasts in the room The officer. Wood continued, found most of the 15 ORVs he clocked traveling at 35 mph, with one at 50 mph. one at 60 mph and one at 65 mph The speed limit is 25 mph, he said Thomas Hedgepeth, Umpqua port commis sioner, said too many hikers can be just as harmful as ORVs Aesthetics is another point of disagreement, he said “I don't believe I have the right to tell someone not to drive because I don’t like tire tracks Maybe he doesn’t iike to see footprints " Evelyn Trumbo spoke to both sides With more people, beach management is necessary, but putting down others by laughing, interrupting and name-calling will not bring about that goal, Trumbo said We re not gonna get there by yelling at each other " simiimiiimiimiimiiiiiiiiimimiimiiiimiiiiimiiiii Illllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllillllllllllllillllllllllllllllllllllil Applications are now being accepted for Fall 1982 OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PHARMACY for information call 754-3424 or write School of Pharmacy, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331 BIKE sjf 11a.m. Category III/IV 16 miles Noon Novice — Men & Women 8 miles 1 p.m. Category I/ll 32 miles Anyone may enter Men and women prized and placed 5 separately.
