Oregon surprises Hawks Quality jumping gives Ducks 44-point victory By John Healy Oregon wasn't supposed to have anyone of note m the jumps this year Tom Hintnaus. who vaulted well over 18 feet two years ago. is long gone Lamar Hurd, the school record-holder in the triple jump and a 24-foot long jumper, has been hobbled with an injured leg all year. And although Oregon has a couple of jumpers over 7 feet in the high jump, they’ve been inconsis tent at best this year Saturday at Hayward Field, those unnotables — Robert Hannon, Brian WaJley. Phil Cnstain and Hal Myers — gave Oregon track something to cheer about, a 96V?-52Vj dual meet victory over Kansas. The Jayhawks appeared, at least on paper, to have too much depth for the Ducks But pre-meet form charts didn't take into ac count high jumper Tyke Peacock's dismissal from the team Thursday by head coach Bob Timmons. Jeff Buckingham, who looked like an easy winner in the pole vault, couldn't compete because of a bad leg Things got worse once Kansas got to Hayward Field Saturday morning and began competing. Oregon was psyched — thanks in part to the warm weather and pre-meet newspaper reports that the Ducks were going to get killed — and Kansas seemed to have left most of its talent at home. The result was Oregon's third consecutive dual £ T meet win this year "They (Oregon) competed very well,” said Timmons, "while we didn't get things done." Oregon got off to a surprising start when fresh man Brian Crouser improved his career best in the javelin by almost 16 feet. His throw of 259-1 qualified him for the NCAA meet. Then Myers and Hannon picked up second and third, respectively, in the long jump, finishing ahead of two Kansas jumpers with career bests of over 24 feet. Freshman Cory Randall set a national age group record in the steeplechase, running 8:45.62, and the Ducks were on a roll. After those events, said Timmons, “We were never in it." Walley and Christain both won jump-offs against their Kansas competitors, Walley vaulting 16-0 and Christain jumping 6-10. "The vault, the high jump, and the triple jump just didn’t work out,” said Timmons Those three events weren't the only ones the Jayhawks had problems with. Oregon ended the day by winning 14 of 17 events, including two wins by Dean Crouser in the shot put (65-10J/0 and the discus (207-3) and a double win by George Walcott in the 100 (10 44) and the 200 (21 00). Jim Hill won the 1,500 (3:48.95); David Mack the 800 (1:53.13); Bill McChesney the 5,000 (13:59.56); Dwight Robertson the high hurdles (13.96 wind-aided); and Don Wright the intermediate hurdles (53.32).
