Ducks tourney bound
Coach hopes
for chance at
Golden Bears
By Paul Darner
Of th* Emrrmkt
Coming off a pair of victories
last weekend, the Oregon
women's softball team will face
its toughest test thus far at the
annual Berkeley tournament in
California.
The Duck women will open
the double-elimination tour
nament today when they clash
with the University of San Fran
cisco Dons in a 9 a.m. contest
Sophomore Marcy Sowa, who
pitched a strong game Sunday
as the Ducks pounded Lewis &
Clark 13-0 on the road, is
scheduled to pitch the opener
for the Ducks
If Sowa, who is 1-0 on the
season, and her mates can
down the Dons, they will ad
vance into the winners' bracket
and play the host Universithy of
California Golden Bears today
at 3:30 p.m
Duck coach Charles Sylvester
said he will go with sophomore
Stephanie Heisler on the mound
if the Ducks meet the tour
nament favorite Bears this af
ternoon. Heisler is 2-0 on the
season after she pitched the
Ducks to a 5-2 win over Western
Oregon last Friday
Heislers first win came over
the Portland State Vikings, who
will also compete in the tour
ney's seven-team field The
University of Utah, the Universi
ty of the Pacific and defending
AIAW Division II national cham
pion Sacramento State round
out the tournament field
After using Sunday's blowout
in Portland to take a look at
everyone on his roster, Sylves
ter said he is no longer exper
imenting with the Duck squad
This is Sylvester's first season
behind the wheel for the Ducks
"I feel very comfortable with
the ballclub right now,”
Sylvester said. "I have a good
idea of what the individual roles
are now.”
The Berkeley tournament is
traditionally a good barometer
of the Ducks' progress and of
things to come for the Oregon
squad Two years ago the
Ducks made a good showing,
placing third en route to a win
ning season Last year Oregon
was dead last at Berkeley and
wound up 9-19
Should the Ducks fall to the
Dons they would play early
Friday morning in the loser s
bracket, but Sylvester says he
intends for his Ducks to battle
California in the winner's
bracket
"I'm going in to win the tour
nament,” he said. “I anticipate
winning (against USF) and I
want Heisler to pitch against
California ”
Tournament action continues
through to the championship
Saturday morning

ATLANTA (AP) — "Incredible" was one of the
first words uttered by Atlanta Manager Joe Torre
after his unbeaten, record-setting Braves reeled
off their 12th consecutive National League vic
tory
"Considering no one else in baseball history
has done it, considering baseball has been
around more than 100 years, it’s incredible,"
Torre said after his team won No 12 Tuesday
night by defeating Cincinnati 4-2 before a howling
crowd of 37,268 fans at Atlanta Stadium
The Oakland A s of the American League had
set the previous modern record for consecutive
victories at the start of a season in 1981 when they
won 11 straight, a mark the Braves tied with a 6-5
triumph Sunday at Houston
Only one other National League team, the
1884 New York Giants, ever won 12 games at the
beginning of a season St Louis won 20 in a row in
the old Union Association, also in 1884
The Braves came from behind in the ninth
inning Wednesday to win No 13 Claudell Wa
shington knocked in two runs in the bottome of
the ninth to give the Braves a 4-3 triumph over the
Reds
"I guess you do wonder, when you think
about it," said Atlanta reliever Gene Garber, who
blanked the Reds over the final three innings
Tuesday night to preserve the victory for Steve
Bedrosian "If we've done it now, why hasn't
someone done it before?"
