The five-day event, sponsored by the Univer sity International Studies Program, will bring together Northwest college instructors and Oregon high school teachers who are interested in developing and improving global studies pro grams in their schools. In Oregon, the State Board of Education has adopted a one-year global studies graduation requirement beginning with the graduating class of 1984. The conference is part of a new University program on global studies that has been made possible in part by a grant from the Exxon Education Foundation. “Every aspect of our lives is now affected by world political, economic and social events,” says Edward Comstock, international studies research assistant and conference coordinator. “The challenge is for us to prepare ourselves and our students to be world citizens, skilled at responding creatively to an increasingly inter dependent world,” he says. The conference program includes a variety of guest-speaker presentations, discussion groups, workshops, films and exhibits. The sessions will address the problems, instructional methods, and use of classroom and community resources in teaching global perspectives. Participants will be offered a choice of work shops, including sessions on human rights and refugees, preserving past cultures, Americans and foreign language, teaching global perspec tives with simulations and games, and intercul tural communication and understanding. The conference registration deadline is May 8 A $35 fee includes admission to all conference sessions, teaching materials and an international luncheon. Room and board in the dormitories is available at extra cost. Participants may receive up to three graduate credits through the education college, at a cost of $24 per credit hour.
