emerald platform Title IX, strength behind womens’ athletics The Mac Court fans clap and stomp time as the University's women's basketball team works a solid defense against a tenacious Montana team In one fluid motion, Bev Smith reaches up and tips a pass away from one Montana player, fielding the loose ball on the run. She cuts left, then charges straight in. Her speed and ball control baffles the lone Montana defender When the ball falls gently through the net, Mac Court erupts in thundering applause Nearly four thousand fans were at Mac Court Saturday — partly to pay tribute to all-American Smith who played four years for the University — and partly to see the University's most successful team The women's basketball team has compiled the winningest record of all University sports. They are on the eve of the NCAA play-offs If they play with the same precision and overall intensity that they played with Saturday night, they will go farther than any other University team this year The women's athletic program at the Univer sity is gaining in strength and national prestige But funding and fan attendance doesn t ad equately reflect the excellence of the program The major share of the funding still goes to men's athletics And fans also, perhaps masochistically, still turn out in greater numbers for the men's sports The underlying reason women's athletics have made the gains they have is the University’s commitment to Title IX That commitment has been upheld to the letter When cuts in the University budget jeopardized athletics — the University, to its credit, even-handedly cut men’s and women’s sports No one can be so optimistic as to assume that the latest round of budget reductions were the last the State System of Higher Education will mete out to the individual institutions There is talk already that this recent special session will not entirely solve Oregon's dismal revenue situation. Some speculators see another special session in June.
