emerald platform Title IX, strength behind womens’ athletics The Mac Court fans clap and stomp time as the University's women's basketball team works a solid defense against a tenacious Montana team In one fluid motion, Bev Smith reaches up and tips a pass away from one Montana player, fielding the loose ball on the run. She cuts left, then charges straight in. Her speed and ball control baffles the lone Montana defender When the ball falls gently through the net, Mac Court erupts in thundering applause Nearly four thousand fans were at Mac Court Saturday — partly to pay tribute to all-American Smith who played four years for the University — and partly to see the University's most successful team The women's basketball team has compiled the winningest record of all University sports. They are on the eve of the NCAA play-offs If they play with the same precision and overall intensity that they played with Saturday night, they will go farther than any other University team this year The women's athletic program at the Univer sity is gaining in strength and national prestige But funding and fan attendance doesn t ad equately reflect the excellence of the program The major share of the funding still goes to men's athletics And fans also, perhaps masochistically, still turn out in greater numbers for the men's sports The underlying reason women's athletics have made the gains they have is the University’s commitment to Title IX That commitment has been upheld to the letter When cuts in the University budget jeopardized athletics — the University, to its credit, even-handedly cut men’s and women’s sports No one can be so optimistic as to assume that the latest round of budget reductions were the last the State System of Higher Education will mete out to the individual institutions There is talk already that this recent special session will not entirely solve Oregon's dismal revenue situation. Some speculators see another special session in June. Title IX is pointed to by some officials as causing more funding problems than it is worth Yet, without Title IX women's athletics at the University would've been seriously curtailed Women's sports don’t have the cut-throat emphasis that men’s sports have Women's sports seem to embody the finest principles of collegiate competition For the most part men's sports are pre-professional, veritable farm clubs for big money professional athletics The many ovations Smith received in the post-game ceremonies retiring her number illus trates the respect the fans have for her Smith's efforts over four years are the best examples of the importance of Title IX. gabriel boehmer editor’s note The University of Oregon boasts an enrollment of more than 16,000 men and women, the majority of whom are in the heyday of their youth And still, some people can't find adate While many students flock to libraries and taverns on Friday afternoons in search of companionship, countless others have rejected traditional schemes of wooing members of the opposite sex Skeptical that their Wheel of Fortune will ever stop on a winning number, some singles have attempted to eliminate the guesswork from dating by advertising their love for sale Since newspapers are partially dependent upon clas sified advertising revenues for their continued operation, editors applaud those who have turned to the classifieds in search of a fast friend So for the benefit of those who would like to close the book on hit-and-miss romance while supporting the Fourth Estate, I have compiled the following examples of classified adverstisments from the personals column of a reputable metropolitan weekly newspaper Should you choose to write your own advertisement, these should serve as a helpful guide • A PROFESSOR WHO IS male, 55. divorced, intellectual, literate, articulate, accomplished, widely knowledgeable non-stuffy, iconoclastic, caring, tender and menschlich is looking for a serious mutually supportive relationship with a woman who is warm, open hearted, independent, flexible. non-exploitive, non-manipulative. non-smoker and younger • JOURNALIST Jewish white female 30 s seeks male journalists All ages, nationalities welcome Intrigued by arts, travel Zionism Friendship, romance possible • CLASSICAL MUSICIAN Male. 43, 5'8 1501b, needs pretty female. 18-35, not thin, preferably into primal or bioenergetics, to work with on a one to one basis to sup plement therapy I am sensitive, intelligent, understanding, average looking, with a good sense of humor but need to work thru early childhood affectional deprivation If you want a true friend for a sincere relationship and need to be needed & appreciated then please write Photo helpful • MARRIED BUT STILL SEARCHING?
