Erb and Nugent were both defend ing Pac-10 champions Erb got things rolling for the Ducks as he beat ASU's Gary Bairos in the semifinals and then topped Brian Higa of Washington State in the final by one point, 6-5 “Erb pretty much controlled the match,” said Dixon. 'He went up 6-3 and then let Higa get a takedown but that was about it.” At 126 and 134, Oregon's Miles Hancock and Cliff Porter, both rebounded from losses to capture the consolation titles Hancock beat Stanford’s Brian Edmonds 13-0, while Porter blanked Lloyd Melone of Washington State 9-0 At 142, Nugent had little trou ble in reclaiming his title. By Steve Turcotte Of ttie Emerald The Korean women's national basket ball team came calling at McArthur Court in hopes of avenging a defeat three years ago at the hands of the Oregon Ducks But what they got they didn t like — a 78-75 setback to the Ducks at Mac Court before a relatively small crowd of 2,664 In contrast to the men s games at Mac Court this year, the crowd was vocal — what they lacked in numbers, the crowd more than made up for in the foot stomping and cheering departments ‘We fought harder than we had before,” said Oregon women's basketball coach Elwin Heiny “It was the crowd that got the team into the game The crowd really cared, and the players realized that they had come to see a high-class game ” The Koreans threatened to make it a blow out early, taking a 16-9 lead with 13:33 remaining in the first half But two jumpers by Bev Smith and an Alison Lang layin quickly cut the deficit to 18-17, After that point, with 11 minutes left, it was so close that there were nine ties and five lead changes It was Lang who kept the Ducks close in the first half The talented 6-4 center from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, erupted for 24 points in the opening half She connected on 11 of 16 shots from the floor and went 2-for-3 from the line "They did key on Bev and Alison,” said Heiny, "but it’s no secret — it's hard to stop any two players like Bev and Alison who play so well together Bev is good at drawing the defense away from Alison, and then getting the ball into her." On a Hwa Soon Kim layin with 41 seconds to go, the Koreans took a 41-40 halflime lead into the dressing room, and shades of three years ago began to develop Like in the first half, the Koreans once again threatened to make the game a blowout Leading 51-48 with 13 59 left in the contest, the Koreans scored six straight points to take a 57-48 lead before Smith rebounded with a three-point play The Ducks battled and battled and finally took a 66-65 lead on a Mary Ann Stoican jumper with 5 18 left The lead then switched back and forth for the next three minutes until Oregon took a 76-75 lead on two Lang charity tosses with just 1 19 to go Both teams played the patience game but Oregon came out smelling like a rose when Lisa Vetter, a freshman guard, calmly hit two free throws with 52 seconds remaining. After that, the Ducks just hung on and played smartly to win the game On Sunday, the Ducks faced Bellco Electric, an AAU club from Seattle It was obivous from the outset that the Ducks were flat from the night before but still had enough in them to take an 88-78 decision "We expected to be flat today and we were," admitted Heiny "I was very tired from last night,' said Lang, who finished with a game-high 27 points — a total of 64 points in two games for the weekend The Ducks took the early lead, but Bellco battled back The biggest lead for Oregon was a 16-point advantage in the second half. But the Seattle team did not quit. They pulled to within five points with a couple of minutes to play, but a con trolled offense and poor Bellco shooting enabled the Ducks to win the game
