Going away without going broke _ ... Victoria: A little bit of England You'd love to go to England, but you can't afford to fly over the ocean, and you can't get enough air into the tires to drive across What to do7 Luckily, there s a little bit of England only a few hours north of Eugene Victoria, British Columbia, may not have Buckingham Palace and Chuck and Di, but it makes a good substitute for a few days' vacation Especially now when rates are low and the weather is nice The place to stay in Victoria is the Empress, a 70-year-old grand hotel in the grandest style, which is British through and through Unfortunately, its 400-some rooms are usually booked up well in advance, and the price is a bit steep for more than a couple of days There are a number of inexpensive, clean little places near the Empress at more reasonable cost If you have a little extra money, The Olde England Inn boasts centuries-old antiques In every room, and prices start from around $30 Even during this time of year, the Butchart Gardens have something in bloom, and are well worth the time for a leisurely stroll Prices in the off-sea son are a lot lower that when tourists crowd every peaceful corner of the terribly British gardens during sum mer, and it's an excellent way to un wind after those nasty finals Perhaps the most British thing in Victoria is High Tea at the Empress From 2:30 to 4 p m they cover the tables with white tablecloths and the stately lobby becomes a massive tea parlour Everyone sits in the huge armchairs sipping tea, nibbling crum pets and scones and having a jolly good time After that, there's the Crystal Gar dens to wander through The Crystal Gardens is a huge glass building built in 1925, then enclosing a swimming pool and restaurants It has very recently been remodeled, and now is something of a giant greenhouse, filled with fountains, plants and exotic birds There's even a cafe, so if you miss tea at the Empress, you can have it overlooking the gardens And then there s the Craigderroch Castle, the Provincial Museum, the Government buildings, the Captain's Palace, the nightclubs enough for a long break from the books It may not be England really But since it's only eight hours away by car, and easily accessibly by bus — it's bloody easy to pretend by matt meyer You've got to be kidding Believe it or not. it's a good time to go to the Oregon Coast. OK. you may not see as much surfing as if you were in Hawaii, and you won t get as much of a tan as if you were lying on the beach of Sydney, but we re talking student budgets here. % Perhaps the best thing about the coast is its built-in romantic atmosphere A simple yame of Scrabble can become the start of something big with the roar of the waves and the ominous horizon in the background (beats a Montovani record hands down). For non-Scrabblers. there are romantic strolls along the beach, driftwood fires (legal on most Reaches — check to be sure) with marshmallows and cuddling, awesome sunsets and nippy gray morn ings. There's a surprising amount of diversity available at the coast. You can start by buying a kite an^taking advantage of the coastal breezes There are kite shops to visit both in Eugene and at the coast that carry everything from low cost paper kites to fabric models costing hundreds of dollars. »L If you're feeling adventurous, wetsuits can be rented for a day of diving or surf ing. Or you can try your hand at clamming or even fishing, if the weather's right. If you don't manage to bring in enough to fill you up. there are. naturally, an abundance of great seafood places. Mo's, both in Newport and Otter Rock, and the Wind ward Inn in Florence are good places to start, then work your way through some of the lesser known spots. Accomodations range from the posh resort to the humble campsite, with ex cellent views of the sea available from both. The more expensive option offers a few more interesting diversions, like pools, saunas, whirlpool baths, tennis courts, champagne brunches and golf courses, but many towns on the coast have public facilities available at low cost. Not surprisingly, the cost for all this is fairly reasonable. Tourism is an important part of the coast's income, and merchants are anxious to attract the few off-season tourists that come by. High temperatures bring high prices and big crowds, which makes this the perfect time of year for visiting the beach — at least when there are no Pacific storms brewing.
