Women win, men lose to Cougars By Jeff Dickerson Ollhu EnmM Pullman, WA — The Washington State Cougars did something different Monday night against the Oregon men. They ran their way to a 76-69 victory over the Ducks in Pullman Oregon defeated the Cougars in January in a slow-down affair, 60-56, but the Cougars came out running this time In fact, after the Ducks knotted the score 7-7 early in the first half, it was all Washington State from then on. WSU scored eight of the next nine points and went on to establish a 37-30 halftime lead. Except for two minor flares of brilliance by Oregon, the Ducks could not get into the game Oregon did get some satisfaction from the Cougars In the preliminary game, the Duck women defeated Washinton State 64-47. "When we left Eugene," men's coach Jim Haney said, “we needed to get some class back into the program, and I felt like we made a big step in that direction (an 82-78 win over Washington Saturday).” But the Ducks were left to a "dull, bad perfor mance" in the other half of this road trip the coach said "Offensively, we were disjointed We continued to compete, but we didn't do the little things you have to do to win, Haney said. "I thought we gave it workmanlike effort — we were dull." Oregon senior forward John Greig led all scorers, tallying 21 points before fowling out with 1:04 remain ing Jerome Williams followed with 16 and Blair Ras mussen with 10 for the Oregon cause Steve Harriet led the Cougars with 18 while Ronnie Joyner scored 16 and Craig Ehlo pumped in 13 for the Cougars Washington State came out shooting a torrid 52 percent from the field and probably would have buried the Ducks even further down if they hadn't turned the ball over 14 times The Ducks shot a paltry 34 percent from the field in the first half. They improved that to 44 percent for the game but it still wasn't enough to catch the hot-shooting Cougars Oregon's 17 of 22 from the free throw line was the biggest factor in keeping the Ducks in the game Everything went Oregon's way in the women's game As usual, Bev Smith (19 points, 14 rebounds 9 assists) and Alison Lang (28 points 11 rebounds) led the way for the Oregon women After a sluggish start, Oregon assumed a 30-21 halftime lead The Ducks went the final two minutes of the opening half without a point The second half was all Oregon, as they quickly added 10 points to their lead, and cruised home The Ducks shot 49 percent from the field (25 of 51), compared to WSU's 36 percent (21 of 65) Jeanne Eggart led the losers with 15 points Oregon, now 19-4, is two games shy of its second straight perfect Northwest Women's Basketball League season The Ducks continue to hold onto tenth place in national rankings The win for the women completed a three game sweep over Washington, Eastern Washington, and the Cougars as they prepare to enter the first round of the NCAA playoffs The Ducks are hoping to play at home, and the successful road trip will help them tremen dously The men return to action this weekend Oregon faces USC Friday and UCLA Saturday in MacArthur Court Meanwhile the women host the Republic of Korea national squad Saturday night, then turn around and play Bellco (an Amateur Athletic Union game) Sunday in Eugene et al.
