Security Conference Dove joins nuclear panel by Dane Claussen and Mike Anderson Of Emerald An internationally known peace activist is the most recent addition to the program of the ASUO-sponsored National Security Conference, according to conference co-planner David Isen berg Peter Jones will join a panel of four others speaking on "Nuclear War Deterrence and World Response to U S.-U.S S R Strategic Policies.” The conference is scheduled for Feb 25-27 in the EMU The four other scheduled speakers are John Draim, an aerospace engineer and defense an alyst, William Taylor, director of Polical-Military Studies at the Georgetown Center for Strategic and International Studies. Edwin Firmage, a noted author and law professor at the University of Utah, and Terry Provance, who currently holds key positions in the American Friends Service Com mittee and International Mobilization for Survival. A journalist and contibutor to WIN magazine. Speakers on the history and evolution of national security strategy will be retired Army Maj Gen Robert Cocklin, Association of the U S. Army executive director, and Laurence Shoup, a former professor and author of “The Carter Presidency and Beyond: Power and Politics in the 1980s.” The subject of military manpower will be scrutinized by Charles Moskos, an author and military sociology professor at Northwestern University, Barry Lynn, president of Draft Action and editor of Military Law Reporter, and Cocklin. The economics of military spending will be addressed by James Cypher, an author and economics professor at California State Universi ty at Fresno, and Frank Trager, director of studies for the National Strategy Information Center. Speakers assessing the "Soviet threat" will be Ray Cline, a senior associate of the George town Center for Strategic and International Studies and former deputy director of the CIA; and Randall Forsberg, founder and director of the Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies The impact of strategic technology on defense decision-making will be analyzed by Charles Schwartz, a physics professor at the University of California at Berkeley; and Draim. Speakers on international security assis tance include Leslie Brown, deputy director of the Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs and a former foriegn service officer, and Michael Klare, noted author and a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies Printing administrator earns service award Walter Parsons, superintendent of the Univerity printing department, received a management service award Thursday from Gov Vic Atiyeh The award is part of the Governor's Management Service Recognition Program” for state employees A letter nominating Parsons, which was signed by more than 60 University employees, called him an excellent administrator who is dedicated, knowledgeable, helpful and fair" and noted his ability to "operate a financially healthy department ” Parsons became superintendent of the printing department in 1974 when it was operating in the red and has since made it pay its own way He has worked for the department since 1964 "The way I see it I’m this year's representative for all the others who deserved the award.” George Beltran, University publications director, and Larry Waddell, operations supervisor in the Registrar’s office, also were nominated Criteria used for selecting award nominees included high quality performance on the job, performance exceeding job requirements, and improvement of University operations.
