"I know Aki (Hill, the OSU coach) was getting mad at the officials at the beginning of the game Women thrash Beavers 71-59 But I thought the calls were correct." Heiny was one of few in Gill to think so The officials, Norm Beck and Cathy Peterson, whistled foul after foul on the Beavers Things got so bad for OSU that star forward Robyn Clark had to sit down with three fouls with 16:54 left in the first half And with 13:59 remaining, the Beavers went into the penalty with seven fouls Oregon quickly took advantage of the opportunity The Ducks hit on an amazing 24 of 28 free-throw attempts to take a 36-27 first-half lead Oregon hit on 6-of-28 from the floor while OSU hit on 10-of-37 "Oregon State is a very ag gressive team,’' said Oregon senior all-American Bev Smith, who played in her last game with the Beavers “With some officials, they don't get called, but with others, like tonight, they do get called "It was very physical on top and under the basket, but that's just the way Oregon State plays ” Things did not look good for the Ducks in the early going Oregon missed shot after shot, and let the Beavers take a 12-8 lead with 14 45 remaining in the first half But the Ducks, behind a string of 10 consecutive freethrows, took a 20-17 lead with 8:22 remaining It was at that juncture in the contest that OSU cener Jan Martin picked up her third foul and had to leave the game Oregon scored the next eight points to take a 28-19 lead before the Beavers could find the basket again "I don’t think their pressure defense really hurts us that much,” Heiny said "But a lot of our turnovers (29 for the game) were silly and caused by a lot of unforced errors on our part ” The Ducks won the game with a tremendous surge midway through the second half Leading 61-49, Oregon went on a 10-2 spurt to assume a 71-51 lead, and it was proverbial “garbage time” after that with 1 27 remaining Mary Ann Stoican, who had gone 0-7 from the floor in the first half, came alive in the second half to key the spurt She hit on three shots to turn a 65-49 lead into a 71-51 Duck advantage Stoican finished 4-for-9 from the floor "It bothered me that we didn't get our lead bigger than it was in the second half.” Heiny said "But it was pleasing that they didn't come back on us " Defensively.
