While most of the attention was pointed towards Willhite, the Ducks were quietly assem bling a large — the biggest number in the Pac-10 reported Wednesday — and talented class of 1986 Due to penalties prescribed by the NCAA probation, Oregon could only offer 25 scholarships this year, compared with the usual 30 grant-in-aids allowed The Ducks used all but one of them, plus awarded five scholarships going back to 1981-82 to the community col lege recruits already enrolled at the University Going in to the recruiting season. Brooks and his staff knew they needed help in some key areas • Immediate help in the of fensive line, where most of the blame for last season's 2-9 record fell • Some young, but talented defensive linemen for the future • Replacements in the line backer corps decimated by graduation • A complete stocking of players for the kicking game • More bodies to fill the quar terback position Without exception, the Ducks acquired help in all those areas within the group that included 10 Oregon prep recruits, and five junior college transfers "We did fill a lot of our needs," said Brooks "lam very pleased with the in-state guys we were able to get And I think the junior college guys are pret ty key ” Brooks envisions transfers Ray Wheatly (6-6, 240). Ed Stringer (6-6, 260) and Steve Jensen (6-4, 247) stepping into Ray Wheatley the offensive line next season Brian Heater (6-5, 240) from South Salem, and Mike Berlin (6-4, 230) from Orme, Ariz., are the next-biggest in a large group of recruits — 11 in all For the defensive line, where graduation will take its toll next season, the Ducks lured Ryan Mickolasik (6-7, 235) from Del Oro, Calif Brooks is high on a pair of Oregon prep linebackers — Dan Devaney (6-3, 218) from Grant, and E.J Duffy (6-2, 215) from Jesuit Tim Wise (6-0, 185) from Monte Vista Calif could be the answer to all of Oregon's kick ing needs He thumped a 59 yard field goal this year, and went for a 41.5 average per punt After receiving commitments from quarterbacks Todd Ander son and Dana Hill earlier in the week the Ducks picked up a couple more — Stephen Jones (6-0, 185) transfer from College Ed Stringer of the Siskiyous, and Kevin Hicks (6-4 . 200) transfer from Santa Barbara Community Col lege As always there are those few that get away "We did lose some quality in-state kids,' said Brooks “I would have liked to have gotten more, and we lost some we would have liked to have Two of the notable preps that Brooks wanted were FitzPatrick and Ashland's Steve Roberts (6-4Vi. 220) an All-State lineman on offense and defense Roberts chose to attend Wa shington But in light of the NCAA probation hanging over Oregon, Brooks has to be pleased with this group. 'You never fill all your needs, but I think we got some guys who will really help us down tbe line “I think the recruiting class is pretty good But the proof of a recruiting class is what happens when they come here." regon’s class of 1986 GREAT ROCK N’ ROLL Bring this ad with you and get 50c Off Cover (offer expires at 1 am) Friday Pitcher Sale 4 - 7 pm With live music by ROCK BAND 24016 FRIDAY & SATURDAY 12th ..._ 13th only one coupon per person - -
