en garde! Continued from Page 6B there would be a couple of Olympic fencing team members competing with Medler. If that was not enough to prepare him for the Junior Olympics, Medler also fenced the 1979 and 1981 Junior Olympic winners in his age division in tournaments in Portland. Medler will have the . ■ ■■ , ■. ' . , W w ' W *V^rW*v »W eomphrtn about mj mmrthodox tftyii,” opportunity to face them again in Los Angeles. Having already won the title once, he is automa tically qualified for the 1982 Junior Olympics. "Those two are very good,” Medler says. “The ’79 winner is from Portland and is still under twenty. Both of them have beaten me, but I haven’t fenced either (of them) recently," he says. The next part of the journey — the qualifying tournament — almost didn’t materialize for Me dler. "I didn’t even know about the Junior Olym pics, or even the qualifying tournament until a couple of weeks before the tournament was to start (Dec 27), but I checked it out in time and I qualified to go " Indeed he did, as he came away with the Oregon State AAU Junior Championship in the under 20 division. Now that Medler has qualified to go, another hurdle looms on the horizon before he actually gets to Los Angeles — money As a club sport operating independently from the athletic depart ment, fencing has to raise roughly $400-500 on its own to send Medler to Los Angeles, and more if fencing members want Campbell to go with Me dler. Fundraising in the form of fencing tour naments, including a Team Challenge Foil event slated for Jan. 30, is how the money is planned to be raised. "I think Mike has a good shot at being a finalist," said Campbell, "if he is on, he could win it.” If Medler does win it, he will have to be satisfied with that, as he does not have enough points over a 2-year period to go to Argentina as a member of the National Junior Olympic team. The top three point getters over the last two years are able to make the trip. The reason behind Medler’s not having earned enough points is that he did not compete his freshmen year and is thus ineligible for the team "Mike is still technically primitive, and still has to pay his dues, but he does have a lot of talent,” Campbell says Story by Jeff Fletcher Photos by Bob Baker • •• Get a new look for the new term : Hair Faire J 1410 Orchard, Rm. 207 342-2165 WEAR GLASSES AND WANT TO FLY?
