His slender, but muscular build immedia tely reveals he is an athlete, but there is something about his brown eyes and pleasant expression that reveals a lot about his inner self Thomas gained a starting role for the Ducks last fall without ever playing a down for Oregon. Coach Rich Brooks watched the smooth moves, excellant hands and amazing catches of the player who redshirted his so phomore year due to an injury, and gave Thomas the starting nod at flanker going jnto fall drills Thomas' 25 catches for 319 yards is a mere shadow of what both he and his coaches expect in the next two years Winter is a time for most football players to reflect on the pluses and minuses of the past season, and for the Oregon squad, a chance to put the past behind them and look to the future. For Thomas, known as "Oz" by friends, the future means more than just the next 50 or 60 years He sees his long-range goal as being something that can never be absolutely ob tained in one lifetime, or even a thousand. “I want to be just like Jesus Christ," the 20-year-old native of Los Angeles says “It was a hard road of emotional difficulties for me, before I humbled myself and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior," he says “When I was younger, I became religious because everyone else was religious." he says, "but my life was not one that glorified God "You see, in religion you can still partake in the world — I found myself being a religious person with more problems than non-religious people "Now, Osborn Thomas is dead to the world and alive to Christ Being dead to the world must not mean being disinterested in the people in it Through his relationship with the football team and the athletic department, Thomas has become a Christian voice with people in those areas "I like to talk to people and let them know I have found the perfect love, joy and happiness that the people of the world are searching for, and let them know they can have that too — just by asking." Thomas has joined the small but growing number of Christian athletes on campus seek ing to share the reasons for their faith with teammates, acquaintances and others Thomas says that probably the greatest example of how his Christianity has affected him is his new relationship with the football team “I’ve been praying for the entire football team and for the people in authority,” Thomas says "I want them to see what a life with Jesus is all about." He says he is obtaining the film,"Football Fever,” to show to his teammates The film stars professional football players who have made commitments to Christ he says, and hopes they will be able to speak to the hearts of some of the players Osbom Thomas As far as his hopes of continuing in football is concerned, he says he now hopes to use the tools God has given him to spread the gospel “My career is not how long or how good I play football — the only way I have to be qualified to prolong my career is through Jesus Christ," Thomas says, and offers proof for his belief "Early in the season, I had an extremely sore right knee that was healed through prayer in a time when my walk with the Lord wasn't as solid as it is now "I was asked. Do you want your knee healed7' I said, yeah! I want my knee healed He told me that only if I believe Jesus can heal my knee will! be healed " He says he left that night with no more pain in his knee With a new outlook on life and a right knee that no longer hurts him, Thomas says he is ready for two more years of college football, where he will continue to be a standout for Brooks' squad "I admire Rich Brooks He means a lot to me, because I believe in him — we both want to have our dreams fulfilled — to win one game at a time and qualify for the high point, which is the Rose Bowl "Its just like a life with Jesus: You lay every liability — excess fat — aside and look not to what lies behind, but what lies ahead "And you press on in faith."
