Advisor’s post remains unfilled By Julie Kuhlo Ot9t»CmwmU A vacated University advising position will remain that way — at ieast temporarily. The reason: the University does not have the funds to replace Mike Marlowe, former student living organizations advisor “What happens now is that some things just don't get as much attention,” says Bob Bowlin, dean of students. Marlowe left the part-time position last week after accepting a full-time position with Rockwell-Hanford Operations of Richland, Washington Marlowe says he accepted the position when the University's financial problems indicated his advising job would have to remain part-time His annual salary has tripled from his University pay of $8,500 Although he was paid for working part-time, Marlowe says he was working nearly 40 hours a week The living organization advisor’s responsibilities include working with fraternities and providing sup port services to the co-ops Marlowe says he thinks Budget pinch cited the University has a real responsibility to provide students with the support they need to run their living organizations. " .. .support is not there or it would have been made full-time." "Most Universities would have one full-time advi sor for both fraternities and sororities, such as Oregon State University has," Martowe says "As you get higher in the University, there isn't anyone who objects to the position, but support is not there or it would have been made full-time " Bowlin agrees there is a need for a replacement "The State Board of Higher Education mandates that the Greek organizations meet certain codes, such as fire codes," he says "An institution that has houses has a mandate to work with them on these things “The fraternities must also have an educational program every term concerning hazing, with each new president informed of the rules and regulations," he says Marlowe, who had worked for the University since 1979, says he "left things in good enough order that it'll be okay for awhile,” but Bowlin is concerned about even short-range effects “I’m picking up quite a bit of the load, but one of the unfortunate consequences of being short-staffed is our contact with the Greeks is only concerning pressing problems, so they see the administration as negative or anti-Greek, which isn't the case ' Although the position is on hold right now, Bowlin says he is hoping to know by the end of the month whether a replacement can be hired "It all depends on what happens next week in the Legislature."
