Atiyeh to meet with SUAB By Phil Lemman Of tttt Emmrtfd Student University Affairs Board members — bracing them selves for a busy time next week — spent their Thursday meeting preparing their legislative lobby ing efforts and a proposal for the University Assembly aimed at strengthening Dead Week rules. Board members will travel to Salem Tuesday for a private half hour meeting with Gov. Vic Atiyeh to express their opposition to the $28 million budget reduction he proposes for higher education Meetings to press the board's case with selected "anti-higher education" legislators and repre sentatives from Associated Oregon Industries, the influential business lobbying group, are also being arranged, says Board vice chairer Mike Prothe Legislators have not yet arrived in Salem for the special legislative session, which begins Monday Board members are also writing a proposal to submit to the University Assembly which would clarify current University policy on Dead Week The University now only "encourages" teachers to not have tests or assignments due during the week before final ex ams, SUAB Chairer Gale Graham said Board members discussed op tions ranging from a prohibition of tests dr assignments due during Dead Week to requiring teachers to list any work due during the week on the syllabus. Keith Johnson, a senior busi ness major, said he was not against introduction of new ma terial during Dead Week "I don't see why a whole week of stagnation is necessary," he sa*d EMU cut discussed Despite the lack of a meeting since November, the EMU Board meeting Thursday turned out to be more a casual kick-off for the term than a real business meet ing Only seven of 15 members at tended the meeting despite dis cussion of the two percent budget cut that faces the EMU Most ASUO-funded organizations have already submitted their plans for budget cuts A cut in programs, announced Dec 1 by the ASUO Executive, amounts to more than $22,000 for the EMU, which has a budget of more than $1.1 million for the 1981-82 year Excess funds in the EMU bud get will be used to cover part of the cutback, said Adell McMillan, r director of the EMU She will pre sent more specific proposals at an EMU Board meeting next week, she said "We couldn't accomplish much this meeting but we needed to meet to begin the new term," said Bob Needham, EMU Board chairer Removing Chris Little, an EMU Board member and chairer of its budget committee, was the other agenda item Thursday Little, now living in California, failed to formally resign before leaving the University and must be removed by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board, Needham ex plained Despite the lack of an eight member quorum, it was assumed Little would be officially removed Correction In an article appearing in Thursday's Emerald, Thomas Brady, physical plant business manager, was inadvertently quoted as saying "and be it resolved that this faculty has no confidence in Chancellor Roy Lieuallen or the Oregon State Board of Higher Education.” A history professor named Thomas Brady made the statement -emu Food Service Students should not have to take tests during that time just so professors have more time to submit grades to the Registrar, Johnson added. Graham, a senior in music education, supported Johnson's position. "Our concern is teachers who test during Dead Week to avoid having a final," he said. Graham also chastised board members for their poor attend ance at Wednesday's University Assembly meeting. They missed a chance to have a significant in fluence on the Assembly 's vote to prohibit students from withdraw ing from classes in which they had been accused of cheating, he said If board members were "excit ed about things they would have been on top of the situation in stead of underneath it," Graham said fjBg& VWs-MERCEDES-BMWs DATSUN-TOYOTA-AUDI Reliable service for your foreign car 342-2912 2025 Franklin Blvd Eugene, Oregon e©e>e>e>e>e>©ee> <? o O' o o o o o ;0 «$ V The top ten currently at $5.99 are AC/DC, The Police, Fo reigner, Journey, Earth, Wind & Fire, Olivia Newton John, Loverboy, Stevie Nicks, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart For all your musical needs, make us your first stop!
