Oregon's basketball team will play for real this Saturday in the season opener vs Cal-lrvine at Mac Court (7:30 p m.) And they'll be taking the court with a lot of youth on their side, as the Ducks feature five fresh men and three others who saw limited action last year ''The framework is there, but we re not consis tent," says Oregon head coach Jim Haney of his inexperienced team We have flurries of five min utes where we play well on offense or defense or on the (fast) break, but not for the entire game or even a half " The most prominent of the newcomers is center Blair Rasmussen (6-11, 250), the Ducks' prize recruit from Auburn. Wash Rasmussen will get a quick taste of ma|or college basketball, as Haney will probably start him Saturday “Blair will make it (the jump from high school to college basketball) intelligently," his coach says "He has good physical ability and will improve in time.” Another important addition to this year's team will be |unior forward Jerome Williams (6-8, 220), who was forced to redshirt last season after suffering a fractured shoulder in the fifth game "I would stack him up with any power forward in the conference in the first intrasquad game Haney says Williams was clearly the dominant figure in that game, scoring 43 points with 29 points and nine rebounds coming in the first half Though he is still not sure who the starting five will be Saturday. Haney says he will probably go with Rasmussen at center, Williams and senior captain John Greig (6-7) at forwards and sophomores Fred Cofield (6-3) and Gary Gatewood (6-3) at the guards Other keys for the Ducks will be senior point guard Barry Walker sophomore forward David Brantley (6-6) and freshman forward Rodnie Taylor (6-8), the only player to score over 20 points in both intrasquad games Haney, starting his fourth year as Oregon's head coach hopes to improve on last years 13-14 record despite the graduation of center Mike Clark, Oregon s leading scorer and rebounder last year not to mention the loss of veterans Ray Whiting, Ron Burns and John Cheatham who all are redshirting this year prior to the start of practice "To be honest, I've never reflected for a moment on how their loss will affect us' Haney says "I'm more concerned with who we have now and with Cal-lrvine " \ E merald photo Jerome Williams is expected to be Oregon's top offensive threat this year, Haney's concerns over Irvine revolve around center Kevin Magee Last year Magee was selected on the first team All-America team alongside the likes of Ralph Sampson. Mark Agquire, Isiah Thomas and Danny Ainge Magee averaged 27 5 points and 12 5 rebounds per game last year He became the only player in college basketball history to rank in the top five nationally in four ma|or offensive categories scoring, rebounding field goal percentage and blocked shots His credentials speak for themselves.' Haney says of Magee "He is a strong, physical, hard-nosed player, Players of his caliber create a lot of prob lems " Besides Magee Cal-lrvine returns the rest of its starters from last year s 17-10 team including guard Randy Whieldon (16 1 p p g ) and forward Ben McDonald (11 0 p p g ) Despite the worries over how to contain Magee Haney seems confident the Ducks will be ready for their opener "We've shown good progress in all areas in this last week Now we need to put it all together in a game ” Matmen open on road A weekend in Las Vegas is on tap for the University of Oregon wrestling team as the Ducks open their 1981-82 season at the Las Vegas Invitational Defending Pac-10 champions, the Ducks will be one of 14 squads competing at the two day tournament which begins Friday Highly touted Cal State-Bakersfield heads the list of teams scheduled to compete and is favored to win the tournament according to Duck coach Ron Finley This tournament should give us a good idea of where we are said Finley, who added that a lot of little things, such as injuries have slowed down his team s progress during preseason workouts Oregon s grapplers begin dual meet competition when they host Humboldt State on Wednesday, December 2 at 7 30 p m Campbell wins sabre event Oregon fencing coach Norm Campbell won the sabre chal lenge portion of the Columbia International Foil Challenge at Vancouver Wa last weekend Campbell who also finished fifth in the foil competition was the best Oregon finisher Mike Medler placed 12th in the foil while on the women's side Tara Harper and Katie Hickey were both semifirialists in the foil McKay’s Open Pantry Delicatessen FEATURING Broasted Chicken - by the bucket nr the piece • thirty treys made to order • Fresh home-made pizza • Fresh bagels and pocket bread • San Francisco style sour dough bread • 31 varieties Imported and Domestic cheese • 35 varieties lunch meat and sausages • Full line salad bar • I lot food to go • Fresh sandwiches made daily Hot or cold, Imported or Domestic foods with old-fashioned service — S hr II Green Stamps, Too! 1980 Franklin Hlvd.
