movie review ‘southern comfort’ is a bit swampy By GORDON BROWN Of th# EmaraM Put "Deliverance" and Vietnam in a blender and you come up with Walter Hill's latest effort, "Southern Com fort Set in the wintry Louisiana swampland, a National Guard unit begins what is supposed to be a routine overnight reconnaissance maneuver Unlike the army squads Hollywood has conditioned us to believe protect our home turf, "Bravo Team" isn't a tight-knit or happy group It's all these nine men can do to avoid fighting among themselves, and in fact, on several occasions they don’t avoid it This is 1973, and there is no vicious enemy, no Hitler to unite against At least not until they enter the swamp swamp Cinematographer Andrew Laslo’s scenery of the Louisiana Bayou is torboding The swamp is dark greys and greens Huge stark trees hang and droop, cutting out all but tiny patches of sky Fog hugs the ground and hovers just above in the leafless trees It is a jungle without the lushness All these reluctant weekend-soldiers want is to get out fast, and with as little discomfort as possible "Southern Comfort" is a metaphor for everything that went wrong in Vietnam—the mastery of terrain over technology, one side fighting for their homeland, while the other is just trying to stay alive and get home. It's hard to identify or sympathize with either side Director Hill has created a realistic and uncompromising ambiguity On one hand there are the Cajuns, whose lifestyle and culture are so foreign that it is impossible to relate to them They slaughter hogs in the middle of a village feast then skin and hang them on nooses for display The entire culture is abhorrent to what is considered civilized and decent, Indeed, just watching the Cajun festival gives the more delicate viewer nausea On the other hand, there is the National Guard unit composed of ignorant, insensitive rednecks, cry babies and macho psychotic-maniacs While Hill is to be congratulated for not succumbing to the commercial-Hollywood formula of making this a simple-minded good-guys versus bad-guys movie, it is precisely here, with the characters and dialogue, where the movie fails The characters are sketchy and shallow making the nine men of "Bravo Team" universal idiots, each in his own cliched role (street-wise redneck, macho, insane, etc ) he's made them one-dimensional and unbelievable Except for Ry Cooder’s soundtrack and some excel lent photography, all that really happens is a bunch of half-wits spend two hours plodding through a swamp getting liquidated by a bunch of backwoods swamprats Powers Boothe stars as a civilian on weekend man euvers with a National Guard unit who must face real combat in a foreboding Louisiana bavou.
