^i^^CwitlnuedfromPagi®^ there, " Billups said "This is a great victory for Coach Brooks," Billups said "He caught all the blame for this season, but he did all he could do to come through this year I think he did as good a job coaching this year as he did last year, but he can't go out on the field and do it tor us " Not that the Oregon coach would have minded going out there and doing the job In the 15 Civil War games he's been in, Brooks has an amazing 14-0-1 record, including a 9-0-1 record as a player and coach at OSU "It (the Civil War game) is tougher on you as a coach It's more tense," Brooks said Part of Brooks' success at Oregon in this game has been his ability to motivate his players to win it Both teams came out with a lot of emotion before the start of the game, but it was Oregon that was able to put two first-quarter scores on the scoreboard to dic tate the tempo of the rest of the game Oregon opened the game with a 51-yard touchdown drive, with the key play coming on second down and 7 yards to go Brown took the handoff on a sweep and broke several tackles with this powerful legwork to romp 21 yards to the OSU 2 yard line Senior fullback Vince Williams went the remaining distance for the opening score with 12:18 remaining in the first quarter Ten minutes later, the Ducks were on the scoreboard again, and it was Williams going over right guard for his second touch down of the game It s a nice win," Williams said, especially since this was my last game We went out there ready to play there was no much emotion out on the field and the line did a nice job of blocking " Brooks agreed with his senior fullback "The real difference in this game (from last year s 40-21 vic tory over OSU) was our mental preparation Last year, I didn't think we were jacked emotionally This year this is clearly our best performance of the year," Brooks said "We were able to move the ball better than we have all season — we controlled the line of scrim mage " Defensively, the Ducks gave up 238 total yards, but consistently denied the Beavers on plays they had been unable to stop previously On third and 5 from the Oregon 23, OSU had a drive stopped and had to settle for a field goal with time running out in the first half when Mike Walter sacked OSU quarterback Ed Sin gler "When you’ve got the ball back and a chance to keep the momentum, a good football team will do it We didn't come close to doing it," said OSU coach Joe Avezzano ‘ We just didn't ex ecute, and then they stopped us They deserve the credit " With OSU trailing by two touchdowns at 31 -17, the Oregon defense stopped the Beavers in a bid to establish momentum after OSU had scored on its previous possession Runners in NCAA meet today By STEVE TURCOTTE 04 B» Emerald The NCAA Division I cross country meet this morning at Wichita, Kansas, will make history It will be the first time that a co-ed national cross country meet will be run by the NCAA The University of Oregon will be represented — by a team in the women s race and by an individual in the men's competition The Oregon women s team which captured the District 8 cross country title last week, is favored to place in the top five — and possibly win the cham pionship "Virginia should be head and shoulders above everybody else," said Oregon women's Coach Tom Hemonen "I don't think anyone will be able to touch them We should be able to improve upon last year s fifth-place finish (in the AIAW nationals) and there s a good chance at making the top three " If anyone has a shot at knocking off Virginia, it would have to be the Ducks Virginia easily won the District 3 title totalling just 22 points — including tour runners in the top five places The Ducks, meanwhile, won the District 8 title with 52 points, posting a balanced attack led by Leann Warren Warren, who has been the Ducks best runner all season long and almost a certain All-American, was a somewhat disappointment fourth in the District 8 race She will be looking to improve upon that finish She will be contested by Virigma's Aileen O'Con nor, who is the AIAW s 10.000-meter champ Other top contenders for the women s crown include Betty-Jo Springs from North Carolina State, Joan Hansen from Arizona, Monica Joyce from San Diego State, Stanford s Ceci Hopp and Oklahoma's Kellie Cathy At the District 8 meet, the Ducks had "the best performance of the season" from the rest of their scores Lisa Martin finished in a surprising sixth place, Eryn Forbes in 11th, Kathy Hayes, 12th, Rosa Guierrez in 19th to round out the the Duck scoring Last season, competing in the AIAW nationals, the Ducks finished in fifth place On the men's side, this is the first time since Bill Dellinger has been coach of the cross country team that the Ducks have failed to send a team to nation als Last week at Stanford, UCLA and Arizona walked off with top honors at the District 8 meet while the Ducks finished third and failed to qualify for the national meet Senior Bill McChesney, after finishing second in both the Northern Division and Pac-10 meet to Washington State' Richard Tuwei, has been battling a leg injury for the last three weeks On paper McChesney is one of the race favorites The lead runners should include the University of Texas El Paso s Suleiman Nyambui and Matthews Motshwarateu along with McChesney and a handful of other runners As usual. UTEP is the favorite to take the team title If they succeed in winning, it will be their fourth straight NCAA team title The race schedule calls for the women's race to begin at 9 a m today while the men are scheduled to run at 10 a m new balance THE ABSOLUTE BEST RUNNING GEAR YOU CAN BUY!
